Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I came from a book club meeting last night. I love discussing books with other people. It enriches the experience of reading so much. I feel I haven't done a good job discussing books with my children. Frequently, when I Have tried, it seems that we don't go very far beyond "I like it", "It was good", etc. So I was thinking about starting a family book club that included my dh, and my two older kids (16 and 12). Do you think something like this will work? any recommendation for books to start with? Eventually I would like the kids to choose the selections to discuss but to start I would like to present some choices. I am thinking about something that is deep enough to spark discussion without being too schoolish. I want to keep it fun and not to present it as a part of school.

What a great idea, Natalie! It would be perfect for the summer months around here, when schoolwork slows down, but learning never ends.
I will have to think about books to start with. I know my ds16, dd's20,15,13, would enjoy it a lot---my husband would probably join in if we would him a copy of the book on tape....

I thought it was good idea too. Now if I can give it more thought and get it off the ground it will be awesome, I think...

Have you read Deconstructing Penguins? It has been a while since I read it through, but I remember being ready to start a book club with my kids (and some others in our group). It was an easy read and had great suggestions for books to read and discuss and getting the book club started in general.

Another idea would be to use Teaching the Classics.

I think this is a great ideaa...snitchable!

Well, I like any kind of books. I even love YA books. I am trying to come up with books that will have a general appeal. I would have two kids and my dh participating. My dd is 16 and my ds is 12. I am also trying to think of books that have "meat", interesting characters, plots, etc. A book that will lend itself to good discussion, and I am thinking that I don't want them to be too long. My plan is to do this more for fun than for school (of course it has an educational plan behind it) so these books would be read in addition to school books. That is a lot of criteria!

I have not seen this book. Unfortunately is not on our library system but I will definitely keep it in mind.

Have you used this? I am going to a Classical Conversations practicum this week and they are using this for the afternoon sessions. I was thinking on skipping them but maybe I should stay...

I *have* Teaching the Classics, but have not used it yet. It is on the list of things to look at. I like the ideas and everything I've read about it. Sorry I could not be more help.
