Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What ages are the Lord of the Rings books appropriate for? Our son reads well but is sensitive to scary things in books.

Start with The Hobbit, and see how it goes. It is much less frightening, but it will give you a flavor of what's to come. LOTR was written for adults, and though it has no "adult content" it does portray evil rather vividly.

This is really an individual matter. I started as Macbeth suggest with the Hobbit to my 4 oldest recently. My ds10 was so keen he then wanted me to read LOTR. Well as I wasn't keen to do that, do you know how many hrs of reading that would be We borrowed the first set of tapes from the library. He was then really hooked, he listened for hours, 18hrs +I think per book. Whereas dd12 wasn't interested.
It does portray evil clearly ds commented on this. Perhaps he could start and if he finds it too scary drop it. How old is ds?

According to my husband, who is totally into this series, there is a ton of symbolism in the images that are significant to the story, which might go completely over the head of a young reader. I'm going to introduce it to my boys closer to their teen years.

We started with The Hobbit and then have read aloud LOTR several times with the kids. Dh does the reading at bedtime. The first time we read the series, the boys were young so dh edited out the gruesome parts. I know that they missed part of the storyline and much of the symbolism, but they got a lot out of it too. Each time we've reread, they've caught more. We are now reading the Silmarillion to them. It is harder to follow, so we are taking it slowly and explaining some of the symbolism to the boys as we go along. Everyone is enjoying it.
