Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm hoping you all have some suggestions for me. Some of my girls have been asking me for new book suggestions. They want something that is set in current times, along the lines of The Penderwicks. I'm really at a loss.

I'd be interested in suggestions for both children and teens. If there is mystery or intrigue, all the better according to at least one dd, but that's not necessary.

Any ideas?

Irene

What about Elizabeth Enright's series, Four Storey Mistake etc, they are a few decades ago, is that recent enough?

We love the Four Story Mistake and other books in the series, I think the first one is The Saturday's. I am pretty sure we have all the books if you want to check our shelves.

Carter, Ronan and I are enjoying the series The Ranger's Apprentice, though not set in modern times.

Have they read The Mysterious Benedict Society, modern times and intrigue. There are two books, I think we have the second one. Oh what about the Percy Jackson series???? The first one is The Lightning Thief. Everyone here LOVES them!!!

Have they read Listening for Lions by Gloria Whelan? We really enjoyed that when we were doing our Africa unit. I just read her Angel on the Square which is also good but not modern.

Good question Irene, I am frequently looking for books like this too.

I asked Abby who currently has 25 books out of the library! She also suggested Mysterious Benedict Society. Our family loved The Westing Game by Alan Raskin. Also one that Abby likes is called Double Identity by Margaret Peterson Haddix. What about the Andrew Clemens books. She also likes books in the fantasy genre - by Gail Carson Levine, Robin McKinley, Shannon Hale and Cornelia Funk

Well I did think of Ranger's Apprentice as we are big fans I just finished posting pictures of our cloaks.

You have me interested in the Mysterious Benedict books now.

Irene,
Do you feel your oldest is ready for Regina Doman's trilogy? Shadow of the Bear etc? They fit your girls' criteria.

I'm going to take modern meaning anything written in the latter half of the 20th century +.

-Jean Craighead George's My Side of the Mountain trilogy if you have any nature/adventure lovers.

-Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons series

-Robert McCloskey's Homer Price books

-Encyclopedia Brown books

-Eleanor Estes Moffat books.(or are they earlier?)

-Drover's Road Collection by Joyce West (Bethlehem bk)

Do you want any modern history or living geography titles? or are you after more 'fun'?

My oldest two, and dh, have enjoyed the Dragons in our Midst series. It is set in modern times but is a fantasy and Christian allegory. Not quite Tolkien material, but they have read the books more than once.

Other than that, my kids are stuck in the Mossflower Woods, Middle Earth and Jane Austen's England!

Have you considered E.L. Konigsburg books?

My two favorites are From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler and The View From Saturday.

I'm dying to read her latest, The Mysterious Edge of the Heroic World if only because of this review -
Matt Berman reviewed the book saying, "This is clearly not for everyone, or even for most. Konigsburg not only writes about gifted children, she expects her experienced readers to be equally clever, to be comfortable with ambiguity and sophisticated vocabulary (or at least willing to look things up), and to be willing not only to read, but to think.

Oh dear, I don't know if we can handle THAT.
