Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

He loves Redwall, LOTR, and has read most of the Bethlehem books. He just finished Tarzan and Hans Brinker.

What's next? I am especially thinking of Christmas presents.

Thanks!

Hmmm.

If he likes stories about boys who tinker and solve mysteries, the Alvin Fernald series is excellent (by Clifford B. Hicks). Homer Price is usually a big hit with boys his age. My Side of the Mountain is another tried-and-true favorite. Boys who like short mysteries often enjoy the Encyclopedia Brown series, too.

Having said that, let me throw out our recent read-aloud favorites:

Chasing Vermeer (Blue Balliet)
The Penderwicks (about girls, but SO not girly)

Sequels of the above books

anything by Edward Eager (warning, magic involved...completely safe otherwise)
Code Talker (Joseph Bruchac) (Navajo WWII Code Talkers)

I hope this list inspires other moms to post!

Molly

Considering he has read all the Redwall and LOTR, which my boys have too, he is bound to LOVE the Ranger's apprentice series by John Flanagan. His 8th book is to be released in Australia next month Check here for cheap books and free postage.

I'll ask my 11yr old bookworm for other favourites.

We really like the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.

We also like the Blue Balliet books, Chasing Vermeer, The Wright Three and The Calder Game. All of them have sparked art rabbit trails for us, just today we were at the National Gallery of Art checking out the Alexander Calders.

My almost 11 ds enjoys the Penderwicks, the second one does have some boy/girl stuff, but not too bad.

He also enjoyed the Half Magic books by Edward Eager. Has he read The Saturdays? My children love that quartet, The Saturday, Four Story Mistake, Then There were Five and A Spider Web for Two, a Melendy Maze, by Elizabeth Enright (I think).

Have you done Swallows and Amazons yet?

How about the Warrior series, the cat one. The next series is about polar bears.

I've been stumped by finding more books for my ds10. DS finished Redwall. He read The Hobbit but not the other LOTR, we've been waiting till he's older, maybe I'll have him try. Thanks for bringing this up.

Have just come back with some books for our ds 11.And before I give them to him I thought I'd ask here if anyone has heard of them;

"Here there be Dragons" by James A. Owen
"The Edge Chronicles" by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell
"Hugo Pepper" by the same authors
Maddigan's Fantasia" by Margaret Mahy (we loved her "lion in the Meadow" picture book when the boys were younger but I didn't know she'd written fiction for older children and what its stndard was like)
"The Dragonkeeper" by Carole Wilkinson.
thanks in advance
Alison
