Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Would someone please tell me if you think the following books are good/not good for an advanced 7 year old (girl) reader? (If not good, would you please say why?) I cannot keep up with how much she reads, so I'm depending on someone else who's btdt, and is also careful of what you let your children read. I got some great deals and now have:

Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle

Captains Courageous

The Black Stallions Courage - Walter Farley

The Island Stallions Fury - Walter Farley(leary b/c of a horse named Satan)

King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table (I'm now leary of this b/c the back says there's witchcraft)

Around the World in 80 Days

Great Expectations

Moby Dick

Shiloh

(No, I haven't read any one of these books, ever.)

TIA!

I have only read the King Arthur and Great Expectations, and while I think the former might be just fine, the latter really is a bit too advanced
The topics are somewhat adult, so no matter how good a reader she is I think it could cause problems.

Perhaps you might do better with some of the harder children's literature.

Have your tried the George MacDonald books?
Or Lord of the Rings/Hobbit?
Lewis Carroll.
Swiss Family Robinson
Little House
Little Women

Try looking at Baldwin Project for ideas

Hope that helps some!

I listened to half of Around the World in 80 Days.. There wasn't a problem with any of what I heard.

I don't remember enough about Great Expectations. Haven't read the others.

My 7 yo son has read a number of the Illustrated Classics (these are the ones that are abridged, correct? Pictures every few pages? Black and white pics, but colored covers? Just want to be sure we're talking about the same series!)

He really enjoyed Swiss Family Robinson, Treasure Island and Call of the Wild. I wouldn't let him read Jekyll & Hyde. (I know you didn't list any of those, but these are the ones I'm familiar with!) I wouldn't let him read Legend of Sleepy Hollow bc I read the original and it's creepy and I don't know how they could de-creepy it!

We've also read a couple different abridged versions of Around the World in 80 Days and he enjoyed it.

I know how hard it is to keep up! My son is currently reading Hank the Cowdog series and I'm glad that's there are over 50 books to get through before he's itching for a new series!

The Walter Farley books are harmless. There is one horse named Satan, but he is only named that because he is so mean. And he ends up being nice in the end.
I used to love all of the Black Stallion and Island Stallion books as a child.
One thing, though. She may not "get" what's going on in those particular books unless she has already read the first books in the series. They are best if read in order.
