If you had to pick just 5 books to be the first longer chapter books to read to a 5-6 year old what would they be? I'm just looking for ideas here since I've read some books with my son and he is itching for more, more more! (I've read Honey for a Child's Heart and the Read Aloud Handbook long ago... so I only focused in really on picture books -- of which I'm a comfortable connoisseur by now -- but haven't yet gotten used to the bigger books yet.)
So far we've read:
James and the Giant Peach
Stuart Little
Charlotte's Web
The Lion, Witch and Wardrobe (was leery about starting it quite yet but he insisted and loved it)
The Twits
Pinnochio
My Father's Dragon
The Mouse and the Motorcycle
Matilda
Winnie-the-Pooh
Just looking for a refresher on the great reads a K-er would dig.

My boys also loved The Trumpet of the Swan. It was my favorite E.B. White children's book, in fact.
The other 2 Ralph books (Mouse and the Motorcycle, and I can't remember the title of the other?)
Peter Pan
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
The Indian in the Cupboard
I'm looking forward to what others recommend!

Oh yes, we read Winnie the Pooh also.
I think I'll put Mr. Popper's Penguins next on our list.
I'm taking notes here! Thanks and keep 'em coming!
