Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Is anyone familiar with this book? I see it in our library card catalog and I'm wondering if it would be worthwhile to check out. Sadly, de Paola's book on Mary will be checked out of the library until January, and I'm needing something by next week.

Well, I decided to answer my own question by getting the book out of the library to preview. I didn't read it cover to cover, but from the looks of things, I don't think this would be a good book for a Catholic child to read.

First example is the way the Annunciation is handled. There was no reference to an angel, just "a man" who suddenly appeared. Mary is upset, her parents (yes, Joachim is alive) are upset, and there's this whole unplanned pregnancy scandal issue. So, Anna and Joachim send Mary off to Elizabeth and Zacharias since "people are talking." Ugh...

Then there is reference to Mary and Joseph having more children. The book ends with young Jesus helping Joseph out in the carpentry shop.

And the funny thing is, this book is considered a holiday book by our library, so I can only have it out for two weeks instead of four.

So, if you come across this title, don't bother...it's not worth it!
