Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I can't think of any English ones offhand... I do know that there are some reprints of the old ones out.
Andrew Lang has some wonderful renditions... unfortunately his are often not illustrated much.
You could try looking at what is over at The Baldwin Project and see if you like any there. These are usually illustrated and YOU can print them out as you like or sometimes you can buy them.
You might try some of the old bookstores too. Not places like W.H. Smith or Dillons (although they might have something), but the ones that sell used books. They often have good deals and colour plates in them.
You can also try browsing Amazon. If you like it, try Bookfinder.com or addall.com to look for it.

Here are some of our favorites:

Sleeping Beauty, by retold by M. Craft, KY Craft ill.
Also, by the same ill., Cinderella and Greek Myths:
King Midas, Cupid and Psyche, Pegasus and Bellerophon.

Beauty and the Beast, Ill. Mercer Mayer

On my christmas list for dd is Snow White by Angela Barrett and Josephine Poole.

I also love Little Gold Star, by Robert San Souci. Its a Catholic retelling of Cinderella, with Mary instead of a fairy godmother.

If you search in the picture book section, I am sure you will find more suggestions.

Yes, picture books are wonderful for this age (and for many years to come!)

I love anything illustrated by Susan Jeffers--she has a Cinderella and Thumbelina (both retold by Amy Erlich) that are stunning; also The Nutcracker, Hansel and Gretel and The Snow Queen to name a few.

She's also illustrated two books featuring the Christmas favorite, Silent Night, and a beautiful rendition of Frost's Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.

I have found many of these at our local library.

The Real Learning Booklist, especially Primary Cycle B, also has many picture book fairy tale gems to recommend--if you don't have Elizabeth Foss's book yet, I'd highly recommend it.

(There used to be a beautiful introductory website that carried the list, but I can't find it anymore--maybe it was eliminated after the book was published? It had other great stuff, too--most, if not all, of which is incorporated into the book, but that website made me fall in love with the whole idea of "Catholic Charlotte Mason," Tea Time, Nature Studies and the concept of "Real Learning" at home. If it's still around anywhere (anyone?), it's well-worth perusing.)

Warmly,
Eileen
