If your children are reading or have read Harry Potter, at what age did you feel it was appropriate? Did you read it to them or did you wait for them to be able to read it themselves? I have a seven year-old and Im wondering about reading it aloud to him vs waiting for him to be able to read it. We don't "do" movies made from books until we've read the books, so Im completely in the dark about the entire series. We certainly have other things we can read aloud right now, but from what I hear, it's something I would probably enjoy as much as he does and there is no way I have time to read it myself for pleasure.
Id like to hear others' perspectives on the series and its appropriateness for the young school-aged child. Thanks so much!

Feel free to take my opinion with a grain of salt because my oldest is only 3, so we haven't had to deal with this issue ourselves yet...But I would wait until he's older. The first two books in the series are probably fine, but starting in book 3 the series gets darker and more serious. I definitely think book 4 is much too mature for a 7 year old. I think 12 is a good age to start. But I'm sure someone with more experience will be able to give you a better answer. Good luck to you!

Hi,

Since Harry Potter gets one year older in each book, I don't let my kids read them until they are within one year of Harry's age for the first 4 books and within 2 years of his age for the last 3 books. My oldest son is turning 15 and he will be reading the final book sometime this fall. My daughter who just turned 10 in July was able to read the first book. I also never let the kids watch the movies until they have read the book, and finally, although I enjoy the Harry Potter series immensely, there are themes in each book that wouldn't be appropriate for younger children.

My oldest and i read the first book when he was 7 years old ( 7 years ago

) We enjoyed, and enjoyed sharing all the others together. My second son is a much more literal type and has trouble separating reality from fiction. I didn't let him read them until he turned 12, and we discussed a lot.

To me, it is like so many other things. You know your child and what he he is ready for.
