I'm thinking about using the American Girl Unit Study for my 8th grader and including my 2nd grader in with her. Has anyone used this program. I would love to hear any thoughts on it. I would add math, phonics, possibly grammer and spelling.

Do you mean Portraits of American Girlhood? We are currently using it on and off with my soon to be 2nd and 4th graders. I could be wrong (because I don't have a child that old) but it may be a little "light" for your 8th grader as is. My girls are enjoying it though, they love the whole American Girl thing.

I'm interested to hear which unit you're both speaking of. Do you have a link?
Dd and I are doing an Amer Girl Club this year and I didn't know there was already a study out there.

Thank you, Debbie. When I saw it at the http://www.gatewaytoknowledge.com/us7.html link I thought "YES!"  and placed an order.
I deviates from the MODG plans I had for this year but I can't wait to see her face the first day of school when I set this book and the CD in front of her.
I think it'll be a good year.
Perhaps we can plan some "get togethers" throughout the year to share notes and ideas.

When looking at a friend's copy my impression is that it is primarily a writing program centering on the books. It's not what I think of as a unit study. You can see samples at http://www.unitsunique.com/

A few years back my co-op had an American Girls class. Each semester we studied a different girl, ie. Kaya. We read one of Kaya's 6 books each week, did workbook pages from the photocopied from the teacher's guide put out by Pleasant Company, came to class in costume, brought items to show and share from the time period, and read supplemental material. Most of that was optional but the girl's earned trading cards for each thing they did. They loved the cards and would keep binders for them and trade with each other. At class once a week they would cook from Kaya's cookbook, and did a craft from Kaya's craft book. After the end of Kaya's 6 weeks the girl's would put on an ending event like a play usually or once a tea party (for Felicity) for the parents. This was a VERY popular class with the girls in our co-op.
I've also seen the Josefina unit from Portraits of American Girlhood when Cindy Sotelo first started writing them. I believe that's the author's name. I liked it very much also. Though it's been a long time, I do remember it also contained nature science in it.

Just curious if anyone actually ended up using this program and looking for some feedback. I have two daughters almost 9 and 8 who are just getting into AmGirls right now. Did anyone end up using this? Did you like it?

I saw your first post and really wanted to answer. I'm short on time today but found a reply I sent to someone awhile back who asked if we had used it and how we liked it. Here's my reply:

"I bought the AG curricula as my dd's only history curriculum this year and, lo and behold, she started reading Nancy Drew and doesn't really want to "review" the American Girls. She's feeling it's contrived and that's hardly ever a good thing. But, really, it's her and not the curriculum at all. The curriculum is full of good stuff.
I like it. In fact, I love it. We just started an impromptu study of viruses and bacteria and I can see where this curriculum will come in handy as the American Girl books deal with various illnesses that we do not deal with today. I plan to continue using it and keep it for my youngest dd.
I really do think it is worth the money and can be used over and over again throughout your history study.

I did in fact print copies (it comes with a reusable CD of all the worksheets) that we used to copy our virus/bacteria on and the famous people in medicine. The copies then go into our Epidemiology notebook. They're a perfect match.
I see lots of opportunity for history study with this unit study. Not just American Girls.

Thank you so much. I really was hoping it was more than a literature program as I want to use it for history primarily. I know everyone is busy and I didn't mean to be a pest. I was just trying to bump it up and keep the topic active since it was started last year. 
Thanks again for your assessment. I actually used AMG to steer my daughters away from their Nancy Drew fascination. Nothing wrong with Nancy... she was just starting to grate on my nerves! Too much of a good thing I guess!

Fwiw, there WERE 2 history lists using american girl books listed on listmania at amazon....Unfortunately, my bookmark doesn't work anymore...  and I searched and cannot find the lists on amazon.... 
The "Welcome to X's world" were the main books along with the Joy Hakim, History of US series. The sources were secular, so maybe it's just as well... you could put together your own study with Catholic spines and supplements. I think I may have a list somewhere with more titles, please pm me if you are interested and I'll look....

It's so much more than a literature program, Matilda. You'll cover history, science, and math in this curriculum. You can strictly use this as a whole study for the year and cover all subjects.

Any more information on this topic? Likes, dislikes, updates, etc. My oldest would love something like this. We have almost all the books anyway.

I didn't use this program, but I did something similar that I did on my own with my then 3rd grade girl. We focused mostly on history and literature, but we went on little rabbit trails off of it too. We really enjoyed using the "Welcome to (american girl's name) World books to get a better sense of what was ACTUALLY happening during that time period, and it gave us a jumping off place to investigate other things in more depth.
My dd had a few of the books, but we managed to get most of them, including the Welcome books from the library.
