Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Up to now I had 2 low book shelves for my 2 yr old that held all his board books and other toddler books. It was way too many though-probably 40? and they often where in a big pile on the floor.
I scaled that back this week (duh moment) and now he has a basket on that same shelf with about 8 board books and the other shelf has about 6 oversized books. I'll rotate them every 2 weeks or so with the ones I stored in the garage.

We have a large basket in the living room with books for the older 2-overflowing I might add. It's a combo of Ranger Rick mags, books-non-fiction and fiction, and a any book relevent to the season like now is summer or 4th of July.

I need a better way of organizing the older kids books but not sure how.
These are just books that are of current interest or often read, we have tons of bookshelves full of books too.

I do have a separate basket for library books to keep them from getting mixed in.

How do you organize your commonly read or accessible books?

I love the idea of the rain gutter book shelf along the wall but that's not an option in my living room.
would love to hear your ideas.
thanks!

We have several reading "centers" throughout the house. I like baskets for setting things out.

In the living room, I have one shelf set up as our all time favorite picture books - books like Make Way for Ducklings, and Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel. These don't go in a basket usually because we try to take extra care of them. Board books are kept lower for the small hands to reach - these are in a cupboard in the same book-cabinet. Next to the book-cabinet in the living room is a small table and chair set. I keep a library basket of books here for the kids.

The learning room has lots of baskets.

The nature study subject we're working on right now is wildflowers. I keep wildflower identification books, flower press, samples of beautiful nature journals, basket for collecting wildflowers, small vase, color pencils, nature journals and small scissors for clipping wildflowers all in a large basket.

I have a science basket, geography basket, and I'm putting together a lapbooking basket for any book and potential rabbit trail books contained within along with lapbooking supplies. Baskets seem to be a nice way to set out a theme of books. I'm also setting up a lap time basket in the kitchen next to my rocking chair. I don't limit the baskets to books only, like the nature basket for example. I usually try to set up seasonal baskets to coordinate with the liturgical year, like an Advent basket, Lent basket, etc.

For the older kids, books in the learning room are organized by subject, pleasure reading and living literature bookshelves are at the top of the stairs on the landing.

Baskets with scissors and art supplies are kept on a shelf out of reach of the 2yo. I keep small baskets on the floor for our 2yo. He gets his own science basket with touchable items.

Don't know if this helps at all.

Yes, it does--or at least it helps *me*! Thanks for sharing your system.

Thanks Jennifer, I like the idea of each basket having a theme. I also have some good spots that I could officially design as "reading centers."
Thanks for sharing!

We have a main "library" that is a large, walkin closet with floor-to-ceiling shelves. It's organized by topic. That's in our learning room. In each bedroom, the children have bookcases. They have their "special" books there, books given specifically to them as gifts or particular favorite books.
In our family room, I keep a basket of the Catholic Mosaic (and others along the same theme) books. I also have a basket of nature study type books for the season. And then a basket or two of books related to our current unit. These "travel" throughout the house, but generally end up in the room where we do bedtime stories. I also have a big wooden peach crate where all the FIAR titles are kept. Those are in the sunroom, where we eat breakfast and lunch because I like to read them aloud during those times. Not really a "system" but it works for us.

I've been intrigued for some time by the use of themed baskets for keeping books and other learning materials in. Are there any special types of baskets you prefer to use over others?
