I'm not sure if this belongs here or the "Real Learning" forum.
I'm trying to come up with a reading list for the summer for my 13dd. This is what she told me she likes:
"Adventure books with crashing into islands or into the wilderness." She already read Robinson Crusoe, and 20,000 Leagues... and loved them.
She's always had a hard time with books like Jane Eyre and so forth. She'll read them, but they're not as interesting to her. Should I make her read them and hope she'll learn to like this style, or is it ok to let her stick with adventures?
Please help! I don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to encouraging the kids to read.
This is still new to me.

For adventure I would suggest:
The Switherby Pilgrims
Becky Landers Frontier Warrior
Cleared for Action
Midshipman Quinn
Flying Ensign
These are all Bethlehem books (which as Mary pointed out on another thread is having a sale on them at all catholic books.com)
These are pretty action filled and my dd (who is now the nun) enjoyed them. All are for ages 10 and up except the last 2 and they are for 12 and up. I cannot remember anything that would not be okay in them I too have read them all but it has been awhile back, sorry memory is the first thing to go.
Also books by Elizabeth Speare (Calico captive,The witch of blackbird pond (don't let the name of this scare you I put it off for years then finally read it and really enjoyed it),and the Sign of the Beaver) are good books to that my dd who will be 13 this month is just finishing up and reading.

Hi Ruth!
My 13yo twin dds like the Arthur Ransome books (there are 12 of them...Swallows and Amazons, Coot Club...etc)
They are great family-centered high summer adventure fun says my dds!
We love all of the Bethlehem books, and lets see...
The Outlaws of Ravenhurst,
The Bronze Bow,
The Jungle Book,
The Chronicles of Narnia,
Hilda VanStockum Books,
Word to Caesar,
My Side of the Mountain,
Were all books they read this year and many of them more recently. You might want to ck out Michele and Kathryn's Mater Amabilis list for more ideas...we have liked everything we have read so far. They are becoming voracious readers.

Swallows and Amazons again! Strong, adventurous girl "pirates" there and a nice long series which is helpful if your daughter is as voracious of a reader as mine!

Ruth,
Here is a link to a list of books that our girls' book club have read and loved over the last 4 years. (Scroll down to bottom of post). Many have male main characters, but that certainly didn't diminished their enjoyment of the stories! Treasure Island was a favorite as was Redwall. We will be starting Robbin Hood this month. My dd13 is a voracious reader and she is not at all into the Jane Eyre type books. I think if I try her again when she is 16 she will like them. Just leave it for now there is sooo much else to read. All in good time.
DD is outside with a book at present, Blue Fin so I will ask her recommendations when she surfaces
