Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The girls and I discovered The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart.

It's brand spankin' new...published March 2007.

The girls and I are reading Heidi right now and Garrett is still reading Redwall so I'll probably enjoy this book a little on my own until we're caught up with our other reading.

Has anyone read it? Anyone heard good or negative about it?

Anyway, I thought I'd give you all a heads-up.

Here's a summary from jacket:

" Are You a Gifted Child Looking for Special Opportunities? When this peculiar ad appears in the newspaper, dozens of children enroll to take a series of mysterious, mind-bending tests. (And you, dear reader, can test your wits right alongside them.) But in the end just four very special children will succeed. Their challenge: to go on a secret mission that only the most intelligent and resourceful children could complete. To accomplish it they will have to go undercover at the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened, where the only rule is that there are no rules."

It's so new there are no reviews at Amazon, but they do hints that fans of Roald Dahl "...will find a familiar blend of kid power, clues, and adventure in Society, ...Underlying themes about the power of media messages and the value of education add to this book's appeal..."

I haven't heard of it, and it sounds interesting. It also sounds like a book I read as a teenager. I'm thinking of the name...

Cay,

No I haven't read it but I have it on hold at the Library -- it looks really cool! Thanks for the post.

Cay,

Would you mind terribly, telling us what you thought of it?

No where near finished with it, Rebecca.
When, and if, I do, I'll gladly share.

I read it and I just couldn't tell who its audience was -- usually, the age of the characters give you a clue, but these kids are all prodigies and so their age can't be used as judgement for the reading audience.

I thought it was good but seemed like it would be best read by older kids (tween/teen) but I didn't see how they could "relate" to the characters. I did try to get my 15 and 17 yo kids interested but they thought it was dumb....

I also think it was much longer than it needed to be -- a good editor could have clean up alot of unnecessary side issues....

Just my humble opinion.

My Danny just finished reading this book and has put a review on my blog.He read it as his foot was healing. He is 14 and enjoyed it- although he did put it aside to read Harry Potter.

He enjoyed it and told me that I should read it to ds7 as a read aloud.

Has anyone else read it?

A good friend of mine has read it...MA in English and all...she has been running a book club for girls, which my daughter has been included in, for years! She loved this book said it was great and the girls are going to be reading it this year in their book club. Their book club is for 7th grade and up. I have never had any problem with any book this friend has read! So I'm betting my dd will like it.

I know this didn't tell you much about the book...but it does come highly recommended.

Cay,

Did you finish it yet? LOL You don't have to answer that if you don't want to.

Okay, I won't answer.
I set it on the shelf and never finished it. Would you like the list of books that took it's place.

Probably not.

OK, my 14 yo dd just read this and loved it---she eagerly passed it on to her 18 yo (female) cousin who also enjoyed it quite a lot.

My two boys 10 and 8 listened to this on CD. They enjoyed it.

Now the second book is out, The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey.

bumping this up... it's been a few years, and I see this as an audiobook every time I go to the library.

Do you love/hate it?

It's a fun book. Some of the characters can be annoying but overall it was fun and I would read it aloud to younger kids but I doubt my 7 yr old would sit through it yet. (she does fine with Little House on the Prairie and American Girl historical books). But my 9 and 11 yr olds would probably like it. I should remember this next time we're looking for something for the 11 yr old to read.

I didn't read it, but my 12YO read the whole series and loved it.
