Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

When I was in grade school, I read a book called "The Road to Agra," about a brother and sister who journeyed to the big city in search of a treatment for glaucoma. I have no idea if it is still in print. It was good, though...obviously, since I remember the title, cover illustration, etc.

My 12yo dd enjoyed Homeless Bird by Gloria Whelan, about an Indian girl widowed following an arranged marriage. I wrote a review on my blog here.

Daughter of the Mountains by Louise Rankin is about a Tibetan girl who travels to India to try to find her stolen dog - lots of information about both countries. She is Buddhist so there are also lots of references to Buddhism.

Newbery Award Winner Gay Neck is a great story about a heroic pigeon in India. I also have several picture books and myth books on my India page.
