Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

For history we are moving into the time period between the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, specifically focusing on America during slavery. I have an "If You Were There.." book as our jump off place now I just need suggestions on good literature to go along with it. My son is 7.5 so anything around that level would be great. Thanks.

Wow! Thanks so much. I'm still getting used to the forums so it never occurred to me to search old threads. I wish I lived closer to Cincy. That museum sounds great.

We live near Cincinnati. I was really disappointed in the museum when we went to visit it. A small part of it is dedicated to slavery and the underground railroad. I had been hoping there would be more hands-on things to help the children grasp the time period, but there wasn't. There were lots of things to look at and read, but that's hard to do when you're there as a family with some younger children. Personally, I think the sites outside of Cincinnati (like east in Ripley) are more interesting when it comes to learning about the underground railroad. Oh well...just wanted to throw in my $.02.

Christmas in the Big House - Christmas in the Quarters is two books in one - told from the point of view of the slave owners and the other from the viewpoint of the slaves. Very interesting.
