I just downloaded The Pink Fairy book by Andrew Lang and I noticed there isn't a table of contents with page numbers. Is this a sacrifice you make with the free books?

Sometimes. Where did you get it from, though? The ones on Project Gutenberg seem to always have the table of contents for me.

I've noticed that sometimes when you open a book (on a Kindle) it automatically opens to the first page of actual text. You have to push the page back button to get to the table of contents.
Perhaps this is the case.

It does depend on the book. You can't always navigate between chapters either. Sometimes the words are misspelled or have symbols instead of letters. I thought it was just the free books that were like this but a friend of mine only buys her kindle books and this can happen in those too. It's a little annoying, but they are free so I don't mind it.

Thank you, Theresa, Monica, and Adele.
Some of the books do have a table of contents. I was just hoping to be able to navigate easier between the fairy tales.
What is the difference between the free book and, say, a Yesterday's Classic version that you pay for on the Kindle? Are they formatted differently or is it the same book and you can just choose to pay or not?

Yesterday's Classics are totally reformatted versions of the older books. The scanned books into .pdf are the pictures of the original pages of the book.

Getting free books is definitely a mixed bag but I think it's still worth it. I prefer not to get books in pdf format b/c, as Jenn said, often they are just scanned in pages, ie, an image of a page. This makes it not searchable or manipulate-able at all. However, if it was created as some sort of text document and then saved as a pdf it works better. So library pdf books are usually like that. It's better to download freebies as either epub (for non-Kindle readers) or mobi (for Kindles). There are tons of both formats available online for free.
Calibre does a great job of converting between formats and will generate a table of contents for you if one is not there already.

I'm not sure about buying a Yesterday's Classic on a Kindle as I have never done that. I have never paid for any book yet, and I've got over a hundred on my kindle. I have downloaded some googlebooks as pdfs and e-mailed them to my kindle, but as mentioned, they are not able to be navigated. I have had very good luck downloading books from the free websites such as manybooks, feedbooks, and archive.
