Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What I like:
P. G. Wodehouse's Jeeves
Dorothy Sayers' Lord Peter Whimsey and Harriet Vane
Georgette Heyer's romances and historical fiction (not so much her mysteries and short stories)
Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody Mysteries

I'd also like a book about mothering a large family. All the 'large family lit' I have come across deals mainly with practical stuff, but I feel like I struggle more with making sure everyone gets enough of me (and DH) than I do with making sure everyone has a full tummy and clean clothes.

Any recommendations?

Does it have to cover large family?

Two books I'm in the middle and I really like:

Ten Ways to Destroy the Imagination of Your Child by Anthony Esolen

The 10 Habits of Happy Mothers: Reclaiming Our Passion, Purpose, and Sanity by Meg Meeker

Not Catholic books, but very enjoyable and helpful.

practical stuff.. but very funny to read.. Please, Don't Drink the Holy Water and Bless Me Father for I have Kids.

Sometimes the thing that helps me most is being able to sit back and laugh (or at least be amused) by the foibles of family life.

No. I just feel anxious each time our family grows that someone is going to get lost in the shuffle and I was hoping for tips and reassurance from the mother of an even larger family.

Jenn, why do you say they are not Catholic? I know that the authors are Catholic, aren't they? I am just wondering what you mean.

Sara, I don't have any book suggestions per se, but what comes to mind is something I recall from the book, Hold on to Your Kids
This book has been discussed here many a time.

Oh gosh, I don't even remember if it is from the book or from the discussion!

Here goes:

A mother of 11 would get up every morning early and drink a cup of tea or coffee in her rocker. One by one her children would arise and sit on her lap and rock with her a few minutes each day. That was her secret to keeping a hold on her children.

I have paraphrased so much that it might even be a totally unrecognizable story to those familiar with the book. But this is the way I have ingrained it in my brain. Maybe this is the only thing I have retained from the whole book, and I have taken it to heart. I don't sit in the rocker, but I make an effort to be physically close to each child, holding them and whispering endearments or just discussing something personal. I have noticed that this is especially helpful for my 15 yr old.

Dear Sara, I wish you all the best for the upcoming birth and baby moon! Share the good news with us when the baby arrives!

Yes, you're right, I should adjust that. The authors are Catholic, but they write more universally so that Catholics are not their only target audience.

Does that make sense?
