Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

a friend of mine wants to read 12 nonfiction books this year and asked me to select 3 of them for her. i would like to recommend a good biography about pope jp2. my friend is episcopalian but i don't think she would be opposed to reading about such a holy man. i have been reading hsing and child development or gender books in the past year and am not sure my friend would enjoy any of those as her other two suggestions. so, i wondered if any of you had any suggestions for some must read non-fiction? thanks!

The best book about the Pope would have to be Weigel's Witness to Hope -- it's a hefty book but well worth the time to read. It would give a great grounding in where the Pope was coming from and what he did.

Any of Chesterton's books would also be great reads -- he wrote biographies and essays that are wonderful reading (yet deep, too!)

Hope this helps.

Mary (what a great name! )

Here's some Chesterton suggestions:
Everlasting Man
Orthodoxy
St. Thomas Aquinas - The Dumb Ox
St. Francis of Assisi
What's Wrong with the World

For the third book? Alice von Hildrebrand's The Privilege of Being a Woman is supposed to be really good. The 3 Kings are putting this in my stocking so I haven't read it yet. I've also got in mind to read Gladys Hunt's Honey for a Woman's Heart -- which is a book about reading books!

Hope this helps

Definitely Mary.....I think everyone who wants to know history will have to read about him; he was one of the most influential people of the century. Very good choice. I don't know if your friend likes travel adventures, but I recommend Lost in the Amazon because the author is a Christian and he chronicles his growth in personal holiness as he utterly fails in every goal he set for his trip. Also, none of the cussing you would expect from a story of 5 guys lost in the wilderness.
