Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was reading this list here.......

I have read a few of these books on the list......but not many. I was wondering if anyone has opinions on these book choices........and also.....

What other books might YOU add to this list?

There is not enough Austen!!! Which must be why we often re-read, and re-read her books. In fact, as I write this......I hear Bride & Prejudice coming from the living room.

Blessings to my Austen friends!

Oh, and what books on this list HAVE you read?

I have read:

Far From The Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy

Middlemarch by George Eliot

The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Speare

That is not much.

I was already planning to read North and South and Our Mutual Friend this summer......and Vanity fair, also....but I am re-thinking that one since I just saw a movie version.

So....what say you?

What I've read on the list...

North and South, which is quite good, but I didn't like it as much as...

...Wives and Daughters, which is such a treat. You've seen the mini-series, and know how delightful the story is. The book is equally as wonderful!

Our Mutual Friend. I love Bella so much. She's wonderful. It's like all Dickens: just great. The BBC mini-series is really good, too.

I read My Antonia in high school.. don't recall much other than I did read it and I seem to recall liking it some.

I just reread The Witch of Blackbird Pond.. I am still trying to stay ahead of my oldest in reading

You NEED to read Anthony Trollope. If you like Jane Austen, I think you will really like Trollope...particularly the Chronicles of Barsetshire.

Of the other books listed: Middlemarch by Eliot is good. Willa Cather is a wonderful author and I would recommend any of her works...Elizabeth
Speare is also worth reading...the Bronze Bow is beautiful.

Also, Lucy Maud Montgomery is a must read in my mind.

Our Mutual Friend is a great read (and a great view on BBC! As a matter of fact, my 9yod referring to something else said "mutual ... I learned that from Dickens"! ) ...

I also like any of Hardy's -- including "Under the Greenwood Tree" ...

I'm about to start North and South (especially as the Ravelry group, Knitting 19th Century Novels will be starting that book in May-June ....)

Mary, did you know there is a Ravelry group just for Gaskell's novels also? it's called the Gaskell guild. They have just finished Mary Barton and I think are starting Wives & Daughters now.

Have you tried any of Angela Thirkell's novels?
She writes about England in the 1930's and 1940's... very comedy of manners (and she wrote them as sequels to Anthony Trollope's books).

I LOVE these books- all the zany characters and the gentle humor. I especially enjoyed following the characters through WWII and experiencing life in England during the war.
