Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Help! Do I need to read The Hobbit before LOTR? I checked LOTR out of the library but the forwards indicate without Hobbit insight you may not understand LOTR.

Any input would be appreciated, as I promised Chari about three years I would read LOTR!!

imo, nope.

But, the hobbit is actually a fun & easy read. Not nearly as heavy or deep as LOTR (and the continuous trek through un-ending forests described in minute details....)

Marybeth,

I agree with Laura. You do not need to read the Hobbit first. In fact, the characters that are in both books are rather less serious and more comical in The Hobbit than in LOTR. (Compare Gimli with any of the dwarves in The Hobbit.)

The Hobbit is a children's book. LOTR is a series of adult (in the true sense of adult) books. You can read TH if you choose, but you do not need to. It is a good idea to read the Introduction (or whatever it is called) in the first book of LOTR; the background info is very helpful.

Enjoy LOTR!

In Christ,
Deborah

You don't have to read it at all first. TOlkien is THOUROUGH and doesn't leave anything to chance

I agree with all of the above. Hobbit is more light and fun and not at all a pre-requisite. Enjoy LOTR!
