I just ordered this book Bad Catholics' Guide to Good Living by John Zmirak and Denise Matychowiak. It looks like fun. I know the author John. He used to be one of the editors of Faith and Family Magazine. He's a solid Catholic, but humorous, so I'm looking forward to his work. I don't usually rush out and buy the book, but it's on order right now!
Has anyone seen it yet? I'll give an update after I read it.

Here's a quick description: *Celebrate the Feast Days of the Saints--and don't forget your trampoline!*
A zany but ultimately reverent look at the saints, doctrines, customs and folklore of the Catholic Church, with recipes for food and fun from all over the world, and crackpot, delightful party ideas. Written by a Catholic journalist and a four-star chef, it's an entertaining guide and guerilla catechism, wrapped up in one hilarious package. Denise, if I remember correctly, used to be a chef in New Orleans, although I think she might be in NY now.

I just got my copy in the mail today. I loved it! It's quite a humorous spin in some ways. There are some sections that some might consider a bit overboard, but when I thought about it, it's similar to life in the Middle Ages where things were more out in the open. I get nervous when recommending a book like this. I would consider it similar to the genre of Swimming with Scapular. The discussions in the book relate to Catholics who are very familiar with their Faith.
There are two sections in particular, one on St. Agatha, another on a nun...I think Juliana. The recipe suggestions are a bit "racy" but they are actually not original to this book. I found reference to them all over the web as historical recipes!
I got a kick out of some suggestions, like for the Feast of St. Lucy, prepare a finger food feast and blindfold everyone to eat it. The recipes look really good....and I have a feeling since it's a Master Chef who was the cowriter these are tested and made by her...not copied from elsewhere!
Another section I laughed out loud was "Top Ten Catholic Pick-up Lines". Number 8, "how do you pronounce homeschooling: HOMEschooling or homeSCHOOLING?" Number 2, "I love your scapular brown eyes."
But don't get me wrong...there is food for thought here about your personal faith journey.

Well Jenn...here's one of the reviews from the website:
If the authors had not given me a free copy of this book, I would have bought it, but I would have done it online or in disguise at a bookstore. I certainly will give it to many friends, but anonymously. Unfortunately, I still have remnants of a respectable reputation to preserve….
Msgr. Lorenzo Albacete, theologian and author,
professor at the John Paul II Institute for Studies in Marriage and Family
I sure can't wait to read it.

I got my copy today. I have to say, in the midst of major plumbing stress over a burst pipe that all but destroyed three rooms in our house, I found myself holding my sides laughing over this book! I randomly opened the book, and my eye fell on the section covering the Feast of the Most Holy Rosary, one of my favorite holy days. The title was "Lepanto Bowl Upset: 'Hail Mary' Helps BVM Pulverize Saracens 72-6" and goes on to discuss the history behind the feast day. Under the suggestions on celebration, it says "Now, we're not going to suggest going out and sinking some Turkish guy's yacht today. There's time and a place for everything. Instead, why not mark this feast by saying a Rosary---for a change---then reading aloud the whole of one of our favorite poems, 'Lepanto' by G.K. Chesterton.".
The book reminds me somewhat of Envoy magazine, tongue in cheek humor that might strike the unprepared as irreverent, though it is, in fact, orthodox and quite well-grounded in the faith and Church History. With that in mind, be sure and catch the section on "Bonus Celebration (for the Dante's Purgatorio Party on All Hallow's Eve): Sell Indulgences", complete with photocopiable certificates...
Highly enjoyable reading, though I agree with Jenn that I would not feel comfortable giving it to anyone who wasn't well-formed in their Catholic faith.

The Top Ten list actually sounds straight out of Envoy -- Here's Pat Madrid's Top 10 Orthodox Catholic Pick up Lines, from an issue several years ago (also on the Envoy website):
10. May I offer you a light for that votive candle?
9. Hi there. My buddy and I were wondering if you would settle a dispute we're having. Do you think the word should be pronounced HOMEschooling, or homeSCHOOLing?
8. Sorry, but I couldn't help but noticing how cute you look in that ankle-length, shapeless, plaid jumper.
7. What's a nice girl like you doing at a First Saturday Rosary Cenacle like this?
6. You don't like the culture of death either? Wow! We have so much in common!
5. Let's get out of here. I know a much cozier little Catholic bookstore downtown.
4. I bet I can guess your confirmation name.
3. You've got stunning scapular-brown eyes.
2. Did you feel what I felt when we reached into the holy water font at the same time?
1. Confess here often?

So do I ... I remember laughing so hard at the shapeless jumper the first time I read it ....
As I mentioned, Envoy's website has a lot of their Top Ten lists ... they usually leave me laughing out loud.

Nope, I was just making it a sticking point because I don't like when other authors DON'T give credit. A little pet-peeve of mine. Besides, it's called "plagiarism"!
Backgrounds revealed: I met my husband through a Catholic online dating service (not one of the good ones, but oh well). The author John I had met before I met dh. We're weren't a good match for dating, but he's been a good friend. He used to edit Faith and Family and had me do a few things when he was there. I loved the opportunity.

Yes, as a writer, I understand your pet-peeve!That's why I felt bad that my post sounded otherwise ... I should never post when I'm sleepy.
