Peggy Noonan's book When Character was King is my highest recommendation.

PS My best friend's Grandmother lived across the street from RR and was not allowed to associate with him. The reason being..his Dad liked to drink beer and spirits!

Thanks Marybeth.......my library did have it.......wonder how I missed it..........
I am sure my librarian will put her nose down at my book choices this time.......I reserved some kid bios, too.......let's see how politically correct they are.....
What makes it your highest recommendation? have you read other bios?
thanks for the anecdote! funny!

I think I just loved how Peggy Noonan really wrote her book with such love and respect for RR. She had all these first hand accounts it made it such an inspiring read. I recommend (when you have time) reading her other books as well. Her book with articles post 9/11 is amazing!
I know I have read others but can't remember them at the this point. Our old library had quite a biography collection.
I'm slowly making my way through the bio of Loretta Young who was Catholic in the old days of Hollywood. They sure had their share of scandals which were well buried so as not to offend the public!!!

Thanks for your response, Marybeth.
I am looking forward to my RR bio............the one I ordered for Jane Austen.........just arrived yesterday..........I started it this morning.
Loretta Young was the aunt and godmother of my son Garrett's godmother. My friend was at Loretta's deathbed.............and I can tell you, in all certainty........regardless of scandals, etc........she died a happy and holy death. Deo Gratias.
When I first saw what you were reading.........I thought I would like to read that book, on Loretta............but I realize, I do not want more personal info, than what I am given by my friend. I remember how sad she felt by some of the words written, inaccurately in newspapers and magazines.....and some accurately, too.........so, I think I will just skip that one.
Loretta Young sure was a beautiful lady.
Oh, on the side.....Loretta's sister is married to Ricardo Montalban :).......so, my friend has an uncle Ricardo :) I guess there is a movie with Loretta and her two sisters......how fun.
Thanks again.

Oh, Chari please forgive me if I implied Loretta lived a life of scandal. I think she was a beautiful faithful woman. I just meant that in the Golden Age of Hollywood they tended to bury scandals so as to not turn off the rest of society. I wish it were still like that...I am sick of stars wearing revealing clothes and commenting on how marriage is not for keeps and just flaunting their lives for everyone to see.
I understand perfectly about skipping books b/c I only got through about 100 pages in Judy Garland's book and just could not continue. I didn't want to know anything else!
Again, please forgive me if I seemed flippant about Loretta Young's life.

Oh, no! Marybeth! you did NOT imply any such thing!.......I understood what you meant!
But........LY IS implied in scandal, as I saw from a few articles after her death.......and when I talked to my friend about those......that was when I decided to focus on what my friend had to say about the beautiful and faithful woman.....instead of the star who had gossip written about her.........esp. since I couold not discern what was truth or not.
I agree with you about Hollywood.......ugh!!
do you think it is the public and the media that encourage such behavior??? there are many stars married for umpteen years and have kids and keep all of it hush, hush......just wondering what comes first.....
Hey, let me know what you think about the book about LY!
Hmm.......I read Judy's Bio (auto???) back when I was about 17yrs old.......It has always made me remember to pray for her......what a difficult life she had....spiritually speaking. How alone she must have felt.....
PLEASE do not worry.........you were definitely NOT flippant. I am sorry I led you to think those were my thoughts
I just thought you might like to know about her death, in a more personal way
back to school organizing.......yeah....I know I am behind!
