Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A novel about St. Catherine of Siena. Anyone read this?   I'm a few chapters into this and it's really good so far.

I loved that book. From all De Wohl's books it is my favorite.

I read it and I had some problems with it.

It really bugged me that he kept saying she was going around "in a trance." That is so far from theologically accurate!!

Maybe there was something else, but I got rid of my copy....

If you really want to read about the life of St. Catherine you should get her bio by Bl Raymond of Capua (her confessor) or the one by Sigrid Undset. Both are oop but well worth a little searching.

Catherine of Siena is a marvellous saint!

blessings,

I believe Tan re-printed the Blessed Raymond of Capua version a few years ago.

I get a bit bogged down/distracted with de Wohl, because I feel as though he wrote in a very stylized dramatic way, which was common for his time. I was in a book study using this book, and I would occasionally think oh please, this is such fabrication!! embellishments!! etc. I realized I am just a more direct person and do better personally if I can track down any actual writing of a particular Saint.
I will say that I have read all of his books, and Catherine was the one I did enjoy the most...

Lisbet -- I loved Lay Siege! The part with the condemned man makes me cry.

I liked Louis de wohl's books alot when I was a teenager. They helped bring the saints alive for me in many ways. I struggled with saints' stories that couldn't help me see them as a real human person.

I know I am posting late to this thread but I searched on Sigrid Undset, Catherine of Siena because I am currently reading this awesome book (from the library). She is an amazing saint (I never knew this stuff about St. Catherine!)and Undset does a wonderful job telling about her.

These are the types of books I would love to have on my bookshelf for my kids to read. BUT...it is oop and the only copies I can find online cost about $60-70+.

I thought there was some Catholic company or otherwise, with a website, that reprints books like these? How do they decide what to reprint? Or, has anyone found a copy of this book somewhere for cheaper? If not this book, what source do you all use to find/buy oop books like this?

Okay, I just emailed TAN books and asked them how they decide how to reprint a book.

Do you know about Addall? It is a used book site which compares all the different places prices. I just looked there and the show that a place has Undset's bio of Catherine for $32.

www.addall.com then go to used and out of print books. I always check there w/any price I'm looking at on Amazon or abe.
