Novels-overview and sequence
Written by Michael D. O'Brien
Children of the Last Days is not the title of a novel, but rather the umbrella name for the six novels within the series.
Generally most of these novels can be read independently of the others. However, three are best read in sequence since they deal with the saga of a single family, in order as follows:
1) Strangers and Sojourners
2) Plague Journal
3) Eclipse of the Sun
4) Fr. Elijah: an apocalypse
5) Sophia House
6) A Cry of Stone
Sophia House is a "prequel" to Fr. Elijah, but the order in which these two are read does not matter. The latter three (4,5,6) can be read in any sequence.
Two forthcoming novels, The Father's Tale and The Poet, are not officially part of the Children of the Last Days series. The dates for their publication have not yet been determined.

I read Fr. Elijah first, Strangers and Sojourners, Plauge Journal, Eclipse of the Sun and so on.

Indeed it was. YOu recommended it on the big CM list and I had a hunch you were Catholic. You confirmed the hunch a few days later with your --ahem-- reminder to the group that everybody wasn't celebrating Reformation Day. I figured it was safe to write to you privately.

Oh yeah the Reformation Day thing.  You know, after that I could never post on that list again. I was completely ignored every time. There's that discrimination against Catholics again!

I'm just reading "Sophia House" now. Of all the books he's written (thus far), I'd have to say that "Fr. Elijah" and "Eclipse of the Sun" were my favorites. However, they're all excellent. As I've said before, and will say again, how people can even READ those poorly-written Left Behind books, I do not know. Michael O'Brien's books are so far superior in terms of EVERYTHING, you can't even begin to compare them, really.
As for "Reformation" Day, everytime I hear someone mention that, it makes me cringe. You were a bold poster, Michele

Hey, I just finished Fr. Elijah. I'm not sure why I got this one first, I thought I was starting at the beginning but now I see otherwise, oh well. Anyway, I read the entire thing Thurs night and Friday afternoon/night. I just came to the board to find out what the recommended order is, when I saw Elizabeth's question from last week. How timely!

I just finished Sophia house. Cry of Stone is the best book i have ever read. My pastor and friend gave it to me when I was fighting cancer in 2003 and I loved it , felt like the book was reading me. .I just finished Sophia house. Well,
I bought my dh a couple of these books for Fathers Day and I have started them. 
At present I am reading Strangers and Sojourners, to be honest I don't know if I like it so much. I guess I was expecting it to be more like Fr Elijah, I really loved that book. Strangers and Sojourners is like a journal of the soul of a woman. She is very intellectual, searching for God, yet her intelligence gets in the way.
I also bought Eclipse of the Sun, had a sneak preview it looks more like Fr Elijah.

Hi, Erin,
You're not the first to feel that way. I know several people who, having read Fr. Elijah first, were disappointed in Strangers and Sojourners. It is a very different kind of book. If you take it for what it is, I think you might come to enjoy it. It is the beautiful story of a woman seeking God (or maybe, more accurately, of God seeking her) and it doesn't have the thrill of Fr. Elijah. But I did love the book.
And yes, Eclipse of the Sun is more of the Fr. E. strain.

Thanks for the comments Karen,
I'm now reading Nathaniel's growing years and finding it easier going again. I think I was getting bogged down there in the middle. To be honest I have trouble understanding why it is taking Anne so long to 'find God' and end her inner turmoil. A real soul in distress. I think I might be a bit like her friend Turid.

I just finished this one last night. I also got a bit bogged down in the middle. I sort of identified with Anne in the beginning, and the little scene in her childhood where she had visions and resisted the seance stuff made me think she was going to "see the light" so to speak much sooner, so it sort of dragged out. But when I got to the end I found I liked it more than I'd thought. After reading Fr. Elijah it was just such a different book it took a completely different mindset. Now I need to get the next one.

It was 'boggy' in the middle, but I agree I liked it after all. But really Fr Elijah rates as the top!!

Aaagh! I read Fr. Elijah, then Strangers and Sojourners, had Plague Journal on the shelf but somehow thought I was supposed to go to Eclipse of the Sun next so I ordered that and began it earlier this week (had jury duty so I got to read a lot!). I was almost halfway through when it mentioned Nathaniel's journal 'Plague Journal' and I realized what I'd done. I knew the storyline had skipped through a good bit of time, but since Fr. Elijah and Strangers had been so far apart in time I just thought he'd gone ahead again. so now I've put down Eclipse and am trying to read Plague journal which so far isn't nearly as interesting!

OK, so now I'm farther into Plague Journal and even though I'm dying to get back to Eclipse, this one isn't bad either. In fact, I keep getting goosebumps at all the politically correct stuff his kids were getting at school. The whole scenario is not that far off from what the public schools are teaching now!
