Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone read these Margaret Peterson Haddix books?

I've only read the first of the series (the shadow children?) so far. They're in the library's Junior books section. They're about the future world where more than 2 children are made illegal.. and specifically about the children who are illegal and were born anyway and have to hide from the government.

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone had read them and might be able to offer a Catholic perspective. They really seem to be on the side of the "illegal children".. saying that it's wrong for the government to act this way.

If I was not on a reading fast till I go out of town, I would check them out. I hope to remember when I get home.

makes me think of The Giver and ....what is that "classic"?????? it's a blank ....my mind that is .....hmm, is it Brave New World?

Well it's very interesting.. I just got and read the second book.. someone is checking them out just ahead of me.. so my pace is greatly slowed down. They're very interesting.. getting a bit more in the way of history now.. and it looks like there's a systematic way to help the "shadow children"..

like in Alice in Wonderland.. curiouser and curiouser

My 10 year old isn't ready for the topic yet.. my friend that recommended them read them outloud to all her kids but she has a couple teens as well as the younger ones.. said they had lots of interesting talks.

I do think if I let the kids read them any time "soon" that we'll do them outloud so that I can control the pace and make sure we don't blow through them too fast.

My son (12) read these books right before we adopted our daughter from China (definite tie-in to the "only 2 child philosphy!").

Our cousin owns a bookstore in Ohio and sent it to him. He read the whole series and said it was very interesting.
