Okay, Ladies!!
I am re-posting from the other thread.........so we can have our discussion here:
We will start Pride and Prejudice on June 15th!
Who is reading it for the first time?
Is anyone planning to re-read it with us?
I am not going to re-read it now, as I just re-read it in Feb of this year.
But, I am in the middle of the second jane austen mystery.......and the third is here, waiting, too.
Anyone read a biography on Jane? Title and opinions, please.

Oops, I posted in the wrong thread. Chari, perhaps you could add "Pride & Prejudice Book Discussion" to the name of this topic?? I'll copy my comments here:
I have recently finished reading Pride & Prejudice. It was my second time reading it, so I am ready for discussion. However, I am leaving on vacation tomorrow until June 22. I'd be delighted to come home to lots of talk about P&P.
Chari, do we discuss right away or are we waiting until others are finished also? Because here's partly what I condense P&P to: moderation in all things. Too much prejudice kept Elizabeth from seeing the good in Darcy. Too much shyness kept Jane from letting Bingley know she was interested. Too much honesty kept Darcy from proposing properly. Too much reserve kept Elizabeth & Jane from telling others about Wickham earlier.
I might be prevailed upon to continue, but alas, duty calls to finish packing our trunks (merely thinking of Jane Austen puts me in this mood  ).

I put the subject as Jane Austen on purpose.........as I know now, and the future.......this will more adequately cover our discussions...it is hard to stay on the topic of P and P only....and I think we do not need to :)
Has anybody started reading P and P yet? (I know Robynn has finished it.) Is it your first time? What do you think? Have you seen any of the P and P movies? Any opinions on the movies?
We can discuss right away.........just give a warning at the top of the post if you are about to give away part of the story :)
I think you are right about the moderation . I have SO been in the mood for Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy.....but Anne took it with her to Virgina :(
We want to hear more from you Victoria, when you return.
As I will be going out of town on the 22nd.....I will be looking forward to more posts about P and P.. when I return :)

I plan on reading P & P.  I haven't read it in a while. I also thought I'd try to check out the various movie versions of the book. I saw the BBC one way back in the nineties. Then of course, I've seen the Colin Firth version many times. 
There is another version of P & P coming out at the end of September to theatres. For me, it is hard not to form an opinion after see the movie trailer. I am, thought, trying to be very open minded to the film. I think, though, that I shall forever have Colin Firth in my mind as Mr. Darcy and Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennett when I read the book.

I'm joining in on P&P, too, and this is my first time reading it. I am ashamed to say that I have never read any Jane Austen, tho I HAVE read some of the Jane Austen Mysteries and enjoyed them.

Hi all,
I am resurrecting a very old thread to let you all know about a book I bought at Costco today. They have all of Jane Austen's novels in one nicely bound book for $12.99. I felt guilty buying it for myself, so I told dh that I have a present for him to give to me for Christmas!

Excuse my ignorance but I read somewheres that there are something like 15 sequels to P & P!
Is that true?!
If so, I have a lot of reading to do.

Oh, dear, I'm no Jane Austen expert. What I believe is meant by 15 sequels is that other authors since Austen's passing have written sequels to P&P, some serious, some humorous. I have not read any sequel myself, but a friend has and she has enjoyed them. Does anyone else know the answer to this question?
Also, has anyone seen the newly released movie of P&P?

I caught a news story the other day about the new Pride and Prejudice film (movie  ) that is due to be released in the US next week. Apparently it has had an extended - and utterly unnecessary - "romantic" ending added for the benefit of US audiences. 
It was released here a while ago and I decided to take a chance on it as a way of introducing my 10yo dd to Jane Austen (it had the lowest possible censor's rating here). We loved it! If you were getting the UK version I'd highly recommend it. As it is ... ?????

Ah drats, why do they think we need a different ending??? I would have loved to have taken my 10 yo dd to see it, too, Kathryn...Now, well I guess I'll wait and see...

DH set up a surprise date for us the night before last and we saw the new Pride and Prejudice movie. We both really enjoyed it, and I left the theater saying that I think we could let our girls see it when it comes out on DVD.
I found the article that Kathryn linked to very interesting. The extra ending is definitely not faithful to the text -- so diehard Austen fans will most likely wish it were left on the cutting room floor. The extra scene was sweet and romantic, and there was nothing morally objectionable in it at all. They speak endearments to each other (clothed and out of doors) and it ends with a kiss.
If anyone is interested, there are only two possibly morally objectionable parts that I can recall. The clergyman cousin (whose name I cannot recall) is giving a sermon and accidentally stumbles in his use of the word "intercourse" (meaning conversation). I really think the double entendre will be completely lost on most younger kids.
Also, there is the scandal of Elizabeth's younger sister running away with a man and the subsequent marriage arrangements. That could be explained in a way that does not ruin the innocence of young children, I think.
And for all of you moms, I highly recommend the movie!

I have not read the entire article, but it looks very interesting. Here is the last paragraph:
Austen was not an unthinking defender of traditional social order. Not uncommonly, her heroines are upwardly mobile, particularly through the agency of matrimony. Yet she sensed the corrosive effects of individualism, and her uncanny intelligence and attention to the details of social surface enabled her to give us one of literature’s sharpest portraits of this emerging reality. That she also recognized the absence and failure of the Church in combating this decay makes her a public theologian to reckon with.

I just thought I'd share that if you like mysteries and Jane Austen, you may enjoy the Mr. and Mrs. Darcy Mystery series by Carrie Bebris and the Jane Austen Mystery series by Stephanie Barron. I've only read the first book in each series but they were light reading.
Bebris continues on where Pride and Prejudice left off but with a mystery at hand which is eventually solved by Elizabeth and Darcy. I enjoyed her writing. She came very close to the narrator's voice in Pride and Prejudice.
Barron's book has Jane Austen as the sleuth. The first book involved murder and it was a bit darker than the Bebris book. It wasn't too dark that I wouldn't continue reading the series.
