My dd is making her first Holy Communion this spring! How excited we are! She has a dress passed down from her cousins that is very pretty and elegant but dh and I aren't sure it's appropiate for 1st Communion. It has spaghetti straps and since my little "revelation" regarding dress, I feel as though my heart is saying she couldn't possibly wear this to receive Jesus for the first time. I was just looking for other people's comments on what their dd wore for their 1st Communion (lengthy of sleeves, collar type, veil, etc). Thank you so much!

I just got my 7yod a dress online that is sleeveless -- but I'll be making a shurg (either knitted or sewn) to cover the arms. Even in the blazing heat of Rome in the summer, they require shoulder coverage to enter St. Peter's -- I figure that's a good rule of thumb.
I'd certainly use the dress you describe, just make or buy a sweater or shawl to cover the straps....just my 2 bits!

I agree with you TJ. I don't want my daughter to look immodest for her First Communion. I was just looking at the dresses at www.jcpenney.com this morning. Some of them have sleeves, or come with little jackets or what Mary is describing above. I wish I could sew. They are quite expensive! Here's the one I like so far:

I like the dress you thought from JcPenny. Have you checked out:
www.leafletonline.com
We live close to there so we are headed there tomorrow to see what we can find. They are pricey but seem cheaper than JcPenny. I wish I could sew too! Which reminds me that I need to call around to see if I can get into a sewing class! Thanks for your input Becky and Mary!

I was thinking the same thing as Mary, a little jacket or shrug would work nicely.
We don't allow sleeveless either. I made my first dd's fhc dress and was planning to make one for my 2nd dd but she insists she wants to wear the one I made for Mary.

Michelle that dress is absolutely gorgeous! I certainly understand why your 2nd dd would want to wear it!
As far as Leafletonline.com goes, I have checked at the web site but everytime I click on a dress to order it, it says "No longer in stock". I'm wondering if they are going to re-stock soon?

Thanks Becky but I really wanted to make her her own dress. But it's not about what I want is it?

I keep hearing this! One of you ladies who sew should start a dress business...it could be really good!

The one I got for Maggie was on an ebay store called Angelic Kidz -- they seem to have 3 or 4 "stores" that sell different quality (and price levels) of dresses. If you pay the "buy now" price, you get something extra -- I got a wreath head thing for Maggie but other dresses come with the gloves, etc.
Here's the Angelic Kidz (Butterflyxc) link -- do a search for the size you want and "communion" or "white" and you'll pull up all kinds of things. I really like the dress I got for Mags and the prices are better than my sewing it.....and lots less stressful (sorry Michele Q )

Michele, the dress you made is lovely. I am trying to learn more domestic traits. My dd wants to learn to sew but it's tricky to teach her when I don't know myself. Thank you for sharing. God bless!

Oh Mary please don't apologize. I love to encourage people to sew but sometimes it's just easier or less expensive to buy it. There shouldn't be any guilt. I enjoy sewing but there are many times when I just buy an item even though I could make it. That's OK. At least it is with me.

My first daughter wore this dress. My next daughter will wear the same, unless it doesn't fit (she is tall and very skinny).
