Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have been given permission by our priest to do our girls' R.E. here at home to prepare them to be received when I am at Easter. Now, I see in our bulletin that RCIC is starting up for any kids grades 3-5 who haven't yet done their first Reconciliation. Is RCIC usually a requirement in addition to R.E.? I have an email in to our priest but am wondering about the experiences of others. I'm really not interested in enrolling our kids in any classes as we are having so much fun learning together at home.

Martha,

It really varies parish to parish so I would check with your pastor about it and I would also see if your diocese has guidelines regarding the initiation of children and what's required.

I have one girl in my class this year who is preparing for confirmation. She is in a split family and her non-Catholic mother refuses to take her to CCD so she comes to RCIA instead.

FYI: RCIC is a misnomer (commonly used) in that there is no "Rite of Christian Initiation for Children". The adult rite is for anyone who is past the age of reason. I understand why they use the term but I nearly went batty trying to find information on a rite that doesn't exist!

God bless!
