Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

How does one go about choosing a patron saint?

Do you choose one or is it one around your birthday?

My son is working on his First Holy Communion Notebook and we are talking about patron saints and I am not sure about how they are chosen -

Thank you for any advice,

When we named our children we tried to chose the name of a saint that would hopefully resonate with children and whose feast day was a few months away from their birthday. This allows our winter birthday children to celebrate a name day in the summer season.

For example, our 3rd is named Xavier, his birthday is in April and we celebrate his name day in Dec on St. Francis Xavier's feast day which happily works out to be a week before older brother and sister's birthdays!

When the children are older we have allowed them to choose a different patron saint if they are so moved. Some kids have different saints they feel an affinity for.

Our children choose their own. As they grow they learn about alot of saints and eventually they do seem to gravitate toward one special saint which they then consider their patron. They usually end up choosing that saint as their confirmation saint. So far I've had one dd choose St.Bernadette, one dd choose St. Martin de Porres, and one ds choose St. George and one ds St. Francis of Assisi. My littlest has not chosen one yet, so until then I place her in the ever loving arms of Mary.

We've so far linked them to the children's names. Two of them have saints' names and for the other one, there is a saint of the opposite gender with a similar name, so we've gone for that one. I guess you could also go with middle names if your children don't have a saint's name as their first names.

It's also lovely to let them choose their own, as Theresa suggests.

Ours really relate to their saint, and love finding out about them. We were initially worried that the child with the opposite gender saint would be miffed, but there's no problem there.

My older two boys chose their own, though each do have saint names. The 11yo chose St. Thomas Aquinas and the 7yo chose St. George. My youngest son has family surnames (first and middle!) so we picked one for him, St. Nicholas, but now we might change it as the feast falls so close to his birthday. Will have to think on it a bit.

Our parish priest said when we were baptizing one of sons that his patron saint could be Saint Joseph. Our son was named after his great grandfather, Forrest Emerson. Father said in church tradition girls and boys who do not have a saint's name in their first or middle name can take St. Mary or St. Joseph. I love the idea of choosing your own!
