Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was just reading in Around the Year with the Trapp Family that there is a tradition of linking the O Antiphons with the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Of course, they mentioned this tradition, but did not elaborate as to the specifics (as in, which links with which).

Does anyone have this information? I think it would make a very neat study, especially with high school age dc.

Thanks in advance.

Peace,
Nancy

Nancy,

I've read that book over and over again, but it wasn't until I posted it for the blog when that phrase caught my eye. I've studied the O Antiphons for many years, and never saw that reference anywhere else. Perhaps the primary source would have it, but I don't have access. I Googled, and had no luck.

I brainstormed with my mother a bit trying to id the O Antiphons with the Seven Gifts. I'm only sure of one, and that's the obvious.

Wisdom -- O Sapienta/O Wisdom
Understanding --
Knowledge --
Counsel --
Fortitude --
Piety --
Fear of the Lord --

I was thinking O Adonai/Lord of Lords might be Fear of the Lord, since the image is the burning bush.

O Oriens/Dayspring might be understanding?

O Radix Jesse/Root of Jesse
O Clavis Davis/Key of David
O Rex Gentium/King of Nations
O Emmanuel/Emmanuel

Then again, there might not be corresponding gifts with antiphons, but just the general gifts come with Emmmanuel's coming?

Jenn -

I was hoping you would respond! I agree that the O Wisdom has an obvious correlate in Wisdom (the Gift of the HS). The others I couldn't figure out either as far as direct "this points to that." Maybe as you suggest it is a general similarity.

I hope to catch half an hour to try and search this on line a little further and also to ask a well-read friend IRL if she knows anything about this.

Thanks.
Peace,
Nancy
