I'm having creativity block (more accurately I can't find a post from one of you incredibly crafty women  ). I'm in charge of a get-together for my hsing group and it was suggested that we learn about a different saint than Nicholas (we've had St. Nick parties for several years) and we did Our Lady of Guadalupe last year. I'd like to make the little St. Lucy crowns with the girls, but I need an idea for our boys. The party is on the 12th, so I was looking ahead on the calendar for Dec. We'll meet again in Jan. for more saints.
Surely St. John of the Cross or St. John the Evangelist lend themselves to a craft idea - I'm just stuck!
Any ideas?

We made wonderful little St. Lucy's crowns for a party years ago. Please let me know if you would like me to find the photos--they were cute!
As for St. John of Cross or St. John the Evangelist, Spoon Saints would be quick and inexpensive. I recently purchased tiny eagles at the craft store so the children could make St. John dolls. [This might be too expensive for a large group, but, you might be able to make plain little eagles out of paper to go with the spoon doll. Then again, you could just make eagles! Boys tend to really love these.] St. John is recognizable if shown with an eagle and maybe a paper and pen to represent him as an Evangelist.
Must run to read a last book to the children! This post is only barely coherent, I fear. I'll be looking forward to a host of brilliant ideas from the moms on this forum!

Another simple idea: Felt banners featuring an eagle with the words "St. John the Evangelist" emblazoned across the front. Felt is perfect for a crowd because it is reasonably priced and easy to work with. It would require you to do lots of advance cutting though.
Perhaps you might draw inspiration from this eagle clip art.

Ohhh...an eagle...that's great! My problem is that even my cross craft ideas have too much of a female touch. My oldest boy is just 5 and with two sisters and years of Little Flower crafts before him...well, I've got a lot to learn.

LOL! I know exactly how you feel. After 8 years of planning crafts for a Catholic Girls club with my four girls, I am finding it very difficult to think a bit more masculinely for my little boy. He turned five last week, so he is now full swing in the crafting phase, but cannot abide anything too girly.
It looks as if we are in the same boat, so we will have to learn together!

I just thought I'd update with what we did. I used this eagle coloring page printed on cardstock. I cut small squares of various shades of brown paper for the boys to cover the eagle in mosaic fashion (wonder why that idea is stuck in my head ). I bought a bag of feathers that they used to accent. Finally, they cut out the eagle and affixed it to 12x18 cardstock that could then be used as a book cover for a child-sized bible.
The girls made St Lucy crowns, but I had NO LUCK finding the small grapevine wreaths. We ended up using pipe cleaners and made them large enough for the girls to wear. It wasn't perfect, but I was still thrilled to be greeted by my oldest dd and her wobbly crown bringing cinnamon rolls to my bedside the following morning!

That eagle is perfect! I'm sure the boys loved it, and I would love to get cinnamon rolls delivered to my bedside by a fair young maiden too!

For St. John of the Cross, we made bread (herb bread recipe from Suzanne Temple's blog). Instead of braiding it, we split the dough in two, then split off a small section from each half. The two large pieces were rolled into boules. The two small bits left were both split in half. Each small piece was rolled into a length that was about 2" or more longer than the boules (if draped overtop the boules).
We centered one length over one boule, used water to help the length adhere to the boule. We flattened the excess, split the excess length-wise and rolled in each part of the split into curls (think antennae -- water, again, helps) and pressed the curls against the boule (again, water, help it stay in place). We repeated the process with a second length to form a cross on each boule.
We let them rise and then baked according to Suzanne's directions. After removing the bread from the oven, we brushed our bread with butter and sprinkle garlic salt on top.
Probably a bit tastier than St. John of the Cross would have envisioned, but he would probably agree that the Cross is a source of Divine Sweetness.
