BTW...I really miss Dumb Ox...are they ever going back into business?

We got a lovely olive wood nativity from a man who came to sell them at our church. They are made by hand by Christian families living in the Holy Land. They really rely on the income.
Ours wasn't cheap, but it is extremely sturdy, and absolutely beautiful.
I googled 'olive wood nativity Bethlehem' or something like that and got several hits for sources in the US.

My boys did manage to break a wiseman from our fontanini set but it was a clean break so easy to glue back together.

Just casting another vote for Fontanini. Every year I get my mom a piece or two. I LOVE that the pieces have names! I usually try to find her a couple that are the same names as her grandchildren and it is lots of fun. There are only two so far that I can't find (and doubt I ever will) - Kaorin and Jane. The rest of the grandkids so far all have biblical names so they haven't been hard to find.

becky, i found my boys' names but not my girls. this year, i bought two girl figures and announced that they were katia and gemma. my 3yr old is thrilled. maybe that would work for you? or you could look for the kids' middle names?

I just went to the Autom website to look for the nativity set that I have. It's a set with all the main pieces. I bought it there more than 13 years ago, but couldn't find one that is similar. It looks a bit like the resin Fontanini pieces, but was much less expensive. I think I got it on clearance, but the regular price might have been around $60.
While looking I found a nice looking small 12 piece nativity set that is only $9.99. And here is a similar one with slightly smaller figures but with a stable for $12.99. Thought it was worth passing on the links.

We have Fontanni for each of our children's names as well!! They all have Old Testament names. My oldest got his from his godparents, then we saw that there was one that matched our second son's name and got him that one. But we had so much trouble finding the angel that had the same name as our daughter. It is retired, so harder to find. We spend several years looking on Ebay (and one bad experience of not getting one we paid for) and finally got one last year. Yeah! Then of course the little guy has a figure already 'cuz he's in the Holy Family.
The only problem is the sizes don't match. I just figured it out last year. The two named figures and a few other accessories we had purchased had always seemed a little bigger than the original nativity set. Then last year when we got the angel she just seemed to tower over everyone. So I really tried to figure this out and discovered that our original set is not the 5" figures like I always thought. We won it in a raffle from a religious goods store about 15 years ago. It was a special 4 1/2" set that they don't make accessory pieces for. So now it all makes sense but makes for an usual perspective in sizes.
We joke that if we are blessed with any more children we have to give them a Fontanini name.

I really like my Fontanini collection! We received a nice basic set when we got married from a few ladies. I have added a piece or two each years! This is our 11th Christmas so I have a pretty nice collection now. We set out a piece each day of Advent building up the Christmas Day. And believe me they are unbreakable as they have been tested in my house Some of the buildings have pieces that can snap off as it is harder but they aren't fragile. Anyway I enjoy adding to it and figure by teh time we've been married 50 years we'll have the whole cite!

I am in love with the Nativity Scenes at Julie's Stuff. (I just spent the past half hour drooling over everything at her site.)
Julie's Nativity offerings top everything I have ever seen in this line.

If I were to try to start collecting Fontanini, where are the best prices online? I never realized they weren't breakable and that has kept me from starting a set...
And Alice,
I spent earlier this week looking at all Julie's HABA nativity and toy sets...I'm also partial to the little Waldorf dolls as stocking stuffers!

Awww, how sweet of you Alice and Jennifer! The Waldorf and Haba Nativities are nice. I have the Haba for in the boys room and the Kathe Kruse (waldorf) for the girls room. but *I* love my Fontanini! I'd love to carry that line!
As far as a good price I just googled. I found a place that had a 30% off sale and I was tickled! I prefer to support the Catholic businesses though... of course!
