Are you planning on doing any spiritual reading during advent? what would you be reading? I am looking for ideas.

I got the Magnificat Advent companion ... it looks good, I'm looking forward to using it. It was $3.00 at my local Catholic shop.
I get the regular magazine as well and it's really spiritually enriching.

We have the Magnificat Advent Companion, too. Our priest has supplied it for the whole parish for the past several years. It is always wonderful.
I'm hoping to find something else to read, also.

I used the Magnificat Advent Companion last year. I liked it and probably will use it again. If I remember correctly I used the Magnificat during our morning prayer. So I was hoping for some reccomendations...
Maybe I'll try to pose the question in another way:
What are some good Advent themes to meditate on? or some saints whose writings make good advent reading?
Thanks Philothea and Jennifer for your replies.

Natalia,
I am re-reading Donkey Bells by Catherine Doherty right now. I would heartily recommend this book as a great way to open your heart to the beauty of Advent.

Jennifer,
I just ordered Donkey Bells.
Molly,
I love Fr. Groeschel. I'll see about buying this one. I haven't read anything by him in a while so it will be good to get reacquainted with him.
Thank you both,
Natalia

Jennifer, Thank you for posting this. I tried to find this book on Amazon and it was a multi-week wait for delivery...definitely wouldn't be here in time for Advent reading. I don't know why I didn't try Madonna House, but I am so glad you posted the link. I'm SO excited to be blessed by the writings of Catherine Doherty during Advent.

It does look interesting.
I loved this quote:

Are you getting it?

In addition to Fr. Groeschel's book mentioned above, I like to read Carryl Houselander's Little Way of the Infant Jesus. It has also been published under the title, Wood of the Cradle, Wood of the Cross. I believe that both titles are out of print, but it is worth looking for. I got my copy from Sophia Institute Press at a greatly discounted price. They had stopped publishing the book, but still had a few copies that were supposedly damaged (mine was in perfect condition when I received it). The book is also a good read for Lent.

Christine,
Thanks for the recommendation on The Little Way of the Infant Jesus. I found it here for only $12.95 new. I have been wanting to read some of Houselander's writings for some time now. I have never read any of her books. I also ordered The Reed of God which Catherine Doherty says is "one of the best books on Advent." Since I love Catherine Doherty so much, I just had to order that as well! Lots of good spritual reading for my Advent this year--it will help me to open my heart to baby Jesus and to our little one due in January.

All Catholic Books is having a pre-Advent Sale, including 40% off Scepter. The "In Conversation with God" is an excellent daily meditation series, and Volume 1 covers Advent and Christmas.

Jenn,
I LOVE the In Conversation series. Thanks for the reminder to get my In Conversation Advent book out...I have been so frazzled lately that I forgot to do that--thank goodness it's a late start for Advent this year--I'm not even behind in my reading!

Jennifer -- thanks so much for recommending this book! I got it on half.com and it is SO perfect for me and my family this year! I'm excited to read bits and pieces to the kids (while devouring the book on my own!). I love the way it's got Advent AND Christmas meditations and ideas .....
THANKS again.

It's not specifically Advent related, but I've just got 'The Secret Diary of Elisabeth Leseur' from the library. (In fact, they bought it after I reserved it; it's always pleasing to increase their Catholic holdings ) I haven't got far yet, but it looks *wonderful*.
