I showed this calendar on Jackie's thread:
I bought it the other day and had thought I had better go to 4Real to work out how best to use it!
It is approx 17inches long and 14inches high.
The smaller boxes are approx 1 1/2 inches x 1 1/2 inchs and longer boxes are 1 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches.
Each day has a door that opens to a space where something small can be placed - how best to utilize this advent object? I am open to all suggestions!

My children really enjoyed resurrection eggs at Easter - I wonder if something along those lines could be created -- then let us all know so we can copy you!:)

I would put a chocolate kiss and a bible verse (Luke 2-24) in each box.

That's what I'd do too, MacBeth!

I might use the mini drawers for a prayer intention for each day of advent, a scripture verse, or maybe even a good deed that the family can perform that day as a gift for the infant Jesus. At the end of the day, having completed the act of love or prayer, your family might want to add a piece of straw to the manger that awaits the newborn Jesus in your home. My children loved to make the manger ready for the birth of the Messiah with straws representing their prayers and loving deeds!
Hope that helps!

Anne,
That is beautiful! I've seen other calendars like that, but not with the nativity.
I have a few ideas brewing....but I'm not sure how large the drawers are, or if you want this to be a "holding tank" for another project. My first idea would be the scripture verse like stated above. But a bigger idea is to create a small tree or decorated felt banner and create small Sculpey ornaments like the Jesse Tree figures, and each day have the Scripture verse and the ornament put on the tree.
Or, create stickers (like you did for your calendar) for Advent, like Jesse Tree and place them on your calendar as Advent progresses.

I googled and came up with a similar craft from Martha Stewart here and here The second link brings you to a source where you can buy matchboxes in bulk. I think it would be easy to adapt the decor to something more religious if you wish.

We have one very similiar to this, but the figures are magnetic and store in the doors, so we pull them out one at a time. Perhaps you could cover the figures with numbered fabric and uncover them with each door opened - leaving Mary, Joseph and Jesus for last, of course. We include a different advent practice/prayer/verse each day on a piece of paper to go with the figure - kind of creating them anew each advent depending on what our family needs the most work on.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions so far, there is a few good ideas to run with there.
Erin, I bought it from Christian Supplies (Catholic store) in Brisbane City, they had so many just after Christmas that hadn't sold and they had been discounted so I put one on layby, they probably have many left, put away to sell again for this advent coming, pm me if you want me to make inquires for you.
