I have a six and a half year old (who turns seven in February). We technically consider him a first grader this fall. I had thought all along that he would make his First Holy Communion in his second grade year, simply because that is when it is done in school. My oldest son was five the month he started kindergarten so I did wait until his second grade year.

I think ds6 would enjoy working on the First Communion notebook this year. How long does the notebook take? Is one schoolyear sufficient to complete it and have a good grasp on Catechism? I also wondered how necessary Moira's albums are to its completion. I wanted to order them this year but will not be able to order them until Spring. Can the notebook be completed without the scripted exercises and presentations?

Anyone have an opinion on whether it is better to make the First Communion earlier or later?

I guess I am tossing around whether to do the notebook this year with the materials that I have around the house or to wait until next year when my son is a bit older and I am able to afford some of the curricula that would make it an extra special preparation time.

I don't think the age matters, it is the readiness. We begin preparing all along in terms of teaching them faith, then see a real desire develop. At that point, we begin more serious preparation. When dc seems ready to us, we set up an appointment with Fr. to discuss it. Our answer from God is what Fr says. If he says yes, then we proceed. If no, we would read stories of saints who had to wait, continue with spiritual communions and some special projects to continue to learn - and ask again the following year. (We've never had Fr say no to First Communion, we did have to wait 1 year for Confirmation - same approach here).
