Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm in a rut with my Catholic Mosaic speech for Georgia.

I'm trying to be ever mindful that I don't stray from the subject. I really want to give the audience what they came for.

If you attended a talk on the Catholic Mosaic, what would you want me to cover??? Would a Q/A session be the best? I'm scheduled for 40 minutes and I really would need a whole hour to cover it all.

Let's say they offer a tape of the talks. What would you be most interested in hearing me talk on concerning the Mosaic?

Thanks!

Ooh, I wish I could be there in person to hear you

I think a Q & A would be great after a little intro on the concept put forth for the Mosaic. One thing we're going to do and I haven't mentioned it yet, but will soon, is do a poster board of all our Mosaics in a symbol form Something gleaned from one of the pictures in each book)and maybe in the shape of an arch filled in like a stained glass window. I thought this would make a cool record and memory board of our first Mosaic year. HTH

Best wishes at the talk, Hugs.

What a wonderful idea, Meredith!

I have a vision of all the book covers copied off the computer in minature form and framed inside the arch.

What a brainstorming idea!

Hi Cay,

If I were going to a conference (no conferences anywhere near me), this would definitely be a talk I'd attend , and one thing I'd be wondering is what kinds of books are used. Are they all Catholic themed, or are there some books that you use to teach Catholic ideas without the books expressly teaching it? I'd be wondering how many I can get at the library. I'd be wondering how its different from FIAR, besides the rowing concept. I'd be wondering if it would replace something else in my religion plans (like Faith and Life?). I'd be wondering if it would hold my almost 10 yr old dd's attn as well as my almost 4yr old dd. And I'd be wondering if I would need to do a lot of planning and gathering extra materials in order to use it, or if its mostly "grab it and go".

Where are you speaking??

I wish I could hear your talk Cay!! I got my Catholic Mosaic last week and yesterday a big box of beautiful picture books came! Wow, did I really order all that? They are wonderful! I'm so excited to get started! But, back to your question, you might suggest a few scenerios of how the book could be used...like how a mom would schedule this in. For me, if I don't have it in our routine I don't get to it. I'm planning to do CM in the afternoon just before we take our quiet reading break. I'm hoping that the littles will be inspired to re-read the books after we've read them together.
It would also be nice to show how the notebooks could be organized and how it fits so beautifully into the liturgical year.
That's all I can think of for now. I agree that the question / answer period would be very helpful.

Questions I'm hearing:

"What age?"
"Is this just for one year?"
"How would I approach this for multiple children/ages?"
"How to approach the next year when we reread?"

I'd want to know how to use Catholic Mosaic with a larger group (especially after seeing the cool group photo in the book!). My DRE has borrowed my copy and I know she will have lots of questions. I wish I could hear your talk as well!

I think Becky's idea of seeing how the notebooks are organized is a great thought. A couple of years ago, I heard Elizabeth's NACHE talk and it was very helpful to actually see a notebook.

Sigh, Georgia is too far away...

In Norcross, GA near Atlanta. Here's the website:

So many great questions, ladies. THank you!
I might have to rewrite my talk .

I was able to shorten it to allow amble time for Q/A.
Thanks again. I do hope they offer tapes. I'll let you all know.

Cay, I thought of that too, and may do a combination of the two ideas, my dc love to draw so much I just knew this would give them another outlet for their art

I hope maybe someone else might be able to do it too!!

I would want to hear a talk that kept in mind those of us who are uncreative. Absolutely I would like to hear some anecdotes about how it plays it out in real life. Practical information for those who are new or not familiar with real learning would be helpful too...how to approach using CM, suggestions about organization (for those who crave structure), thoughts about coming up with ideas to extend the units. Basically, some help for those who want to give CM a try, but are used to scripted lesson plans.

I'm assuming that some of these homeschoolers might not be using living books as their core?

If I were one of those moms (or dads) I'd like to know how using Catholic picture books would enhance our faith training at home instead of just using some "formal" curriculum.

I think I would like to SEE a notebook completed or hand outs on what you did for one book, etc.

To me this has been the hardest to get my hands around.

Me, too!
I know you asked about questions so you can pull your speech together, Cay, but I'm a visual person and if I could actually see some sort of record of what you've done (with photos and examples)...wow.

I think that visual kind of stuff is what sends me running to the table to buy!

Oh, and I'm planning to buy your tape, if I can get my hands on it!

I've sort of been checking out the vendors selling Mosaic and what I haven't found yet is a "package" of all the books that go with Mosaic. Has anyone done that yet? I would be very interested in that.

By Way of the Family has about 10 or 12 listed on a Mosaic page. Emmanuel Books is interested in doing that . . . but it hasn't happened yet.

Actually my business partner said that if he were doing Mosaic, he'd want all the books at once and would pay for the whole package. I laughed and told him that no homeschooler could afford to do that. I said that most would get them from libraries and find them used . . . but what do you guys think? For me, the search is part of the fun. But would you want the whole kaboodle?
I appreciate your input.

Well, FIAR sells the whole kit and kaboodle but it isn't any where near 52 books in one lump sum. And FIAR sells as a whole curriculum which makes it worth the $$$.

Mosaic is a very small part of the curriculum...but an important part.

Perhaps packages could be offered:
1st Quarter
2nd Quarter
3rd Quarter
4th Quarter

or

Lent/Easter
Advent/Christmas
Ordinary Time
Stories of the Saints
Feast Days

I'm just throwing out ideas here.

Well, I can only speak for myself (and my best friend who is here often!), but we are of the ilk that, while we enjoy the hunt sometimes, would love the chance to wind up the whole process with one transaction!

But I do really like your idea of breaking it up into quarters or seasons, Cay! Makes it easier to explain to the husband when you're buying "MORE BOOKS????"

I would be interested in purchasing them by quarter in a package. It would save me a lot of time shopping on abebooks and amazon and some other weird out of the way places like I did for the Mother Teresa book!

Thanks for the heads up about By Way of the Family--I'll go check it out. I've only bought through August and need to get going on September!

Cay, my kids are really loving these books, thank you!

I have purchased almost all of the books already. my library had none of them so it's purchase or do without. i would have been thrilled with a one time transaction. today i'm sorting through my amazon pile of books to see what's left to find.
