I was reading another post and saw this from Dawn:

So, we asked if he could come to the ceremony at my church (which was Methodist) and participate in some way. He told us that, no, he couldn't b/c our marriage would be invalid and he could not participate in an invalid marriage ceremony.

DH and I were married in a Methodist church. DH was Catholic and I was not (I entered the Church 3 years later). Is our marriage valid? What are the repercussions if it's not? What do I need to do? If I die tomorrow, is my future in heaven at risk??
Thanks

Not to panic you or anything, Jennifer , but you ought to check it out with your diocese, and you will probably need to have your marriage blessed. It's a simple process, as long as there are no impediments (previous valid marriages).

Seems like they would not have let you enter the church (through RCIA?)if they felt you were in an invalid marriage. I know that was one of the things That we had to get straightened out before I could enter.

RCIA processes vary in degree of thouroughness. I know someone who had to be baptized after the fact but had been received into the church. They really should have baptized him conditionally as there was no record. He thought he had been baptised but found out later that he had not. Better to check anything in doubt out. It may be just fine and hopefully your RCIA was more thourough. However, I would still check it out. The blessing can be done quietly, if needed.
Sometimes when the bride is non-Catholic, the ceremony can be performed at another church with special permission, but a priest must receive the vows. If both parties are non-Catholic then even a wedding by the justice of the peace is valid. At least that is how things were explained to me.

I was married in my father's (Anglican) church. I was not Catholic at the time either, but we did have the proper dispensation so it was a valid marriage. We did not need to have it blessed when I went through RCIA.
Ironically, our civil ceremony was in a Catholic Church in Brownsville, Texas, but that one was not recognized by the Church because we didn't have the paperwork in order yet!
Go figure!

Jennifer, Thanks for asking this question and Angie, that was a great article but left me with a question.
I thought each person had to be Catholic to have the marriage blessed in the Church. Is that not so?

Jennifer,
As was shared earlier, dispensations can be granted to Catholics who marry outside the Church. Perhaps DH got one and didn't tell you?
If your marriage isn't valid, as long as there are no impediments (like prior marriage), then it's really simple to have the marriage blessed. Our priest blessed our marriage immediately after I was confirmed. It's the same as a marriage ceremony, same vows and everything. We just had a very quick ceremony w/ only family and sponsors present.
If you die tomorrow, I don't think your salvaltion would be at risk since you had a lack of knowledge on the issue...it's my understanding that you have to *know* what you're doing is wrong to be held accountable for it.
