Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I thought I would post this as my third child, Angela lost her first tooth two days ago (she growing older! ) and she set her tooth with great excitement on her Mary altar that she shares with her older sister Grace, waiting for her first collection! The only thing is, this is the second time that St Applonia has visited our house since we decided to switch 'tooth collecting contractors ' - the fairies - we do love 'em - were a little unreliable occasionally and all sorts of stories were concocted to explain their tardiness .

My husband and I pray to Saint Appolonia every time we are due to step inside a dentist and she has been very good to us! So we felt this would be one tender way to bring devotion to this Saint into their lives - hopefully the devotion for the children will continue into adulthood - some of my children have slight phobias about going to the dentist already.

Hope I haven't offended the fairy devotees but just broadening the competition!

Here are some more pictures of St Appolonia:

Oh, I wish I had known about her before! We don't do the fairy, but we get icecream cones- like in One Morning in Maine by Robert McCloskey when little Sal loses her tooth.

So, inquiring minds want to know.... what does St. Appolonia bring?

She delivers the usual coins but you have got me thinking!! I could be a bit more creative and liturgical with it! I would be very open to suggestions from anyone as to what she could bring.

Hello, Hello!! I was just emailing you when the notification for your posting came through. Yes, I could 'make my own' from pictures from the internet - there are quite a few different pictures of St Appolonia even though she is not a really well know saint.

Anne, I love this idea! I wonder if my youngest two know about the tooth fairy yet? The older ones do, but they're about out of teeth to lose. (We have found the Tooth Fairy to be a bit forgetful at times too! The speculation as to "why" is always interesting!)

Our third son (just turned 5) had a root canal last fall due to two consectutive injuries to the mouth. It was quite traumatic, and he dreads the dentist now. I will certainly start praying to St. Appolonia on his behalf!
