I have found that even having pictures to look at while saying the rosary, I still get distracted. Is it allowable to read the parts of the Bible dealing with a mystery or reading the meditations for the rosary while praying the Hail Mary's vocally?

I hope it is because I have used this approach for many years because my thoughts wander so easily.

We do a little of this with our boys at times, stopping at every Hail Mary to describe a little of the scene of the mystery, just one sentence or two.

For private prayer I have two book suggestions:

Scriptural Rosary these have been around for a very long time. It's pocket sized, and just a quick meditation before the next Hail Mary.

The second is my favorite but out of print:

Ten Series of Meditations on the Rosary by Ferraro. This doesn't cover the luminous mysteries, unfortunately. But there are ten sets of meditations, some scriptural, all providing a thought before each Hail Mary.

Thanks Jennifer, I will look into those books. I do have a couple I use, but I do like variety. :) One thing I don't think I was clear about, was is it okay to be actually reading while praying the Hail Mary vocally? Does that make sense? I know I can read the meditations between Hail Mary's.

I don't think that there is one, true way of praying the Rosary so I wouldn't worry about 'doing it wrong'.

BTW I have a couple of books which follow the practice quoted below and I have found it of great value.

at one time there was a custom, still preserved in certain places, of adding to the name of Jesus in each Hail Mary reference to the mystery being contemplated. And this was done precisely in order to help contemplation and to make the mind and the voice act in unison.

The books are Praying the Rosary: with the Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful & Glorious Mysteries and The Rosary with Fra Angelico and Giotto (which has a different phrase for each Hail Mary).

And a further quote
Pope Paul VI drew attention, in his Apostolic Exhortation Marialis Cultus, to the custom in certain regions of highlighting the name of Christ by the addition of a clause referring to the mystery being contemplated.(37) This is a praiseworthy custom, especially during public recitation. It gives forceful expression to our faith in Christ, directed to the different moments of the Redeemer's life. It is at once a profession of faith and an aid in concentrating our meditation, since it facilitates the process of assimilation to the mystery of Christ inherent in the repetition of the Hail Mary.
