Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Every year we start our school day as a family in the living room praying. This year we worked on Apostles Creed and St. Micheal. Both had more to do with my oldest making his Confirmation this year and so fitting for us to do together.

next year I would like it to be more school based. For our education. Any suggestions of prayers to start our school day?

I would offer for you to pray to the Holy Spirt.

At one of the CM conferences that I went there was a wonderful talk on how CM started developing her philosophy.

Quote:
The fresco at the Spanish chapel atSanta Maria Novella, Florence (John Ruskin called this fresco the 'Vaulted Book') is pictured online. Charlotte Mason discusses the top and bottom of one wall in various volumes. The fresco is attributed to Andrea di Bonaiuto da Firenze, a painter of the 1300's, but in CM's day, it was thought to have been done by Taddeo Gaddi and Simone Memmi. Charlotte Mason loved the way it illustrated her concept of the Holy Spirit gifting men with knowledge, even "secular" knowledge.

The Holy Spirit imparts all knowledge, so it's so fitting to being a school day or any day asking for His Wisdom and Knowledge!

Love this prayer by St. Augustine:

Quote:
Breathe into me, Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Move in me, Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Attract my heart, Holy Spirit, that I may love only what is holy. Strengthen me, Holy Spirit, that I may defend all that is holy. Protect me, Holy Spirit, that I may always be holy.

Saint Augustine

I use the prayer below personally and i guess it could be said as a family

Quote:
Blessed Mother, as you so humbly and graciously accepted God's will to bear and raise His only son, and to guide him in wisdom and virtue, help me in the instruction and education of my children. Pray to your Heavenly Son to grant me the grace and strength to assist in their learning, overcoming tiredness and discouragement. Assist me in the management of my home, so that I may be able to keep order and peace, despite the challenges of schooling within it. Intercede for me, imploring Our Heavenly Father to bestow upon me wisdom, not for my own sake, but so that I may form my children's minds and hearts, so that they may grow into strong adults, helping to shape the world for His glory, and ultimately inheriting the kingdom of heaven. Call upon your heavenly angels to stand by my side, with their great intelligence, to help me understand that which I am instructing, and assist my children in learning of same. We humbly ask this through you beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Suz - that's beautiful I love it.

I am thinking about a prayer I though I heard once from a saint that talks about wisdom, education, etc. It isn't the one posted above though. Any thoughts?

Probably something from Aquinas, I bet. I will ask my oldest if her college has a school prayer.

We begin each day with Morning Offering, Prayer to my Guardian Angel, and St. Michael.

When the year started we had a discussion about which prayers to include and decided together. For closing prayer each day I let one child each day choose a prayer for us to say togethter.

A few ideas. The first 3 prayers are similar. We used to pray that before school started.

Self-Dedication to Jesus Christ (Oblatio Sui)

Lord, take all my freedom. Accept my memory, my understanding, and my will. You have given me all that I have or hold dear. I return it to you, that it may be governed by your will. Give me only your grace and the gift of loving you, and I will be rich enough, I will ask for nothing more. Amen.

There is also the version attributed to St. Ignatius, Suscipe Me:

Receive, O Lord, all my liberty. Take my memory, my understanding, and my entire will. Whatsoever I have or possess Thou hast bestowed upon me; I give it all back to Thee and surrender it wholly to be governed by Thy Will. Give me love for Thee alone along with Thy grace, and I am rich enough and ask for nothing more.

or

Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding and my entire will. All I have and call my own, You have given to me; to you, Lord, I return it. Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace. That is enough for me.

I love the prayer to the Holy Spirit by St. Josemaria Escriva:

Come, Oh Holy Spirit! Enlighten my understanding in order that I may know your commands; strengthen my heart against the snares of the enemy; enkindle my will. i have heard your voice, and I do not want to harden my heart and resist, saying, "Later...tomorrow." Nunc coepi! Right now! Lest there be no tomorrow for me.

O Spirit of truth and of wisdom, Spirit of understanding and of counsel, Spirit of joy and of peace! I want what you want, because you want it, as you want it, when you want it.

A Student's Prayer (by St. Thomas Aquinas)

Come, Holy Spirit, Divine Creator,
true source of light and fountain of wisdom!
Pour forth your brilliance upon my dense intellect,
dissipate the darkness which covers me,
that of sin and of ignorance.
Grant me a penetrating mind to understand,
a retentive memory,
method and ease in learning,
the lucidity to comprehend,
and abundant grace in expressing myself.
Guide the beginning of my work,
direct its progress,
and bring it to successful completion.
This I ask through Jesus Christ,
true God and true man,
living and reigning with You
and the Father, forever and ever.

Amen.

So true, Aagot!

I sent it to my TAC-attending daughter who had not seen it. She was struggling with many of the things mentioned in the prayer while writing a philosophy paper and was grateful to have it. :)

We say a decade of the rosary for DH's intentions because he is out working so hard for us. And we add the prayer to St. Michael.

Bumping this....some great ideas for anyone looking to add a little "student prayer" for the beginning of the day!
