Has anyone seen this new book from CHC?
My son is receiving his FHC in June, and my plans for the year sort of went kapooey. We are all reading St. Patrick Summer together, and I think ds and I will be able to work through The Illustrated Catechism together, but I know we won't have time to complete the CHC FHC supplement ( available now separate from the 2nd grade lesson plans), and I think I am going to let go of having ds recite the catechism like I di with ds1 who was reading and able to practice the questions himself. I like the Mother Loyola books and had planned to use them, but they are thick, and I think I need some simpler but still solid options. Sitting down with a picture book seems doable.
I am also considering Jesus Speaks to me On My First Holy Communion.

I haven't seen either of the ones you're asking about, but I just wanted to add that we are actually using Mother Loyola's First Communion this year and next (a half chapter a week--like you said, it's thick!), even though my kids made their FHC last spring. It's definitely something you can use post-FHC, so don't get discouraged if you can't fit them in. You could always schedule them at a later date.

Jesus Speaks to Me on My First Holy Communion is for after First Holy Communion. I think it's a very nice book and a good way to avoid having a big build up and then no further discussion but it's definitely not preparation material.

Lindsay
Haven't seen that one, we've had years where we've been caught short on time and in that case I always make sure we've covered St Joseph's First Communion Catechism short but comprehensive on the most important parts.
Recently I finally worked out just what I really wanted them to cover, have that here if it helps plus some further book ideas.

Lindsay, I am sorry to respond so late. I do have this book in German, but have lent it out to a friend, so I can't refresh my memory.
In German, the text is wonderful for preparation for the Sacraments. If I remember correctly it has almost everything you need. Very solid!
The pictures are for me partly problematic. Maybe it is just a matter of taste, but I really dislike the Jesus pictures. I do like how the pages are decorated, almost like the old illuminations.
If the illustrator could just redo the faces...????

Thank you, Stephanie. I must admit that I was not impressed with the illustrations in the preview, and that was probably a big factor in my indecision.
I pulled out Jesus and I, which we inherited second hand since ds1's FHC, and I think it will be a good little supplement alongside the St. Joseph Catechism and the Biffi Catechism. I am now thinking that this book might be a little redundant, particularly if the pictures are not so engaging. I found First Communion Days and True Stories for Forst Communicants on librivox, which I have set up for ds2 to listen to independently as part of his daily work.
