My youngest son (7)is fascinated with the Rosary. He is using an inexpensive Rosary while he is learning but we told him he could pick out whatever Rosary he wanted once he learned the prayers. I better start saving now because knowing this kid, it's going to be pure gold.
He now has the Our Father, the Glory Be, Sign of the Cross and most of Hail Mary memorized. He can read the Creed and Hail Holy Queen. I was an adult when I learned the Rosary so I don't really know how much he should be expected to memorize. Do you think it's too much to expect him to know the Mysteries? Or just have him be able to know the categories (Joyful, Sorrowful, etc) without having to know each mystery within a category?
Thank you!

Just sharing this link because my 7YO just did a Rosary study with Cub Scouts. Their requirements are listed on this page and there are also some printouts that you may find helpful.

I have never asked my kids to memorize the Mysteries, but they have just picked it up from praying the rosary as a family or in Church, etc.
With that being said, it is important to meditate on the mysteries (Although this looks much different for a child than an adult). So I think it would be appropriate to use a card, for reference, that has the mysteries on, but not make him memorize the mysteries.

I looked at the link and it is exactly what I needed to know. I am a bit confused though. I know what the Fatima prayer is and where it falls into the Rosary but when do you use the St. Michael prayer?

I was going to say that I don't think there is an age expectation for the mysteries, but like Betsy, it comes naturally with exposure and repetition.

I like these coloring sheets and printable prayer books from Jenn's blog.

I've never heard about using the St. Michael Prayer within the context of the rosary. I think this is saying that learning the St. Michael prayer is a goal, but not part of the rosary.
As far as learning, it really has happened with my family through familiarity. If you are praying the rosary, or even just decades through the week your children will pick up the mysteries of the rosary.
I wrote some ideas that work for our family, and this pages links to coloring pages and other visual aids and manipulatives that build familiarity with the mysteries.
