I'm planning to add Bible Study to our scholling next fall for DS13. I purchased the "Bible History for Young Catholics" both the Old and New Testaments, from Seton. Seton uses Old Testament in 6th grade and New Testament in 7th grade.
When I first started researching Bible Study, I came across a family using a Religion curriculum 1 day, Old Testament 2 days, and New Testament 1 day. (Can't remember what the 5th days was?) Anyway, I liked the idea of studying both parts of the Bible at the same time. Does that make sense? Or, is there a reason to study them separately?

Oh, to add: Old Testament study is 32 chapters, while the New is 34 chapters. Not really much difference.

We study the Old Testament in the first 18 weeks of the year and then the New Testament during the second 18 weeks. We read directly from the Bible two days a week and on the other two days we have catechism. One day we try to get to Mass.
In the past, we have also used the 2 days for OT, 2 days for NT, and 1 day for Catechism approach. That can also working very nicely, but I find it less confusing to just read on one topic at a time. I also like the feeling of actually finishing one section in the first half of the year. It cheers me on to keep going and finish strong! I like a change of pace after 18 weeks. All of that to say, I think this is a personal preference. Consider your own personality when you think about which approach you would like to use.

We're doing 6 week terms next year, so maybe I could switch off at the term.

I am thinking that it would be better to either do both simultaneously (like both each week all year) or complete one and then tackle the other. I think you might lose the thread of the narrative if you keep switching back and forth.
