Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone know the reason why the bishop wears a mitre? My dd asked and was told it was "part of the uniform". I'm thinking there must be more to it than that. I checked on line, but can't really find an answer.

Becky, here's what New Advent/Catholic Encyclopedia    has to say.

It even shows the development of the shape over the centuries.

A wonderful priest in our diocese, Father William Saunders, used to write a "Straight Answers" series in our diocesan paper. Many of the columns were saved and put online on various sites, and he has the collection of columns printed in two volumes. They are wonderfully handy!

Anyway, his answer expands a little on the above article, giving some reference to the Old Testament, which makes it even more interesting to me. Symbols of the Bishop.

I was always told it was supposed to represent the tongues of fire on Pentecost.
