Can anyone recommend a good bible or bible guide? Here is specifically what I need it for: When we read the readings in the morning, sometimes there are parts that I cannot explain to the children (or to myself, for that matter! ). I would love a resource where I could look up what the passage is about, what Jesus is saying here, what it references, etc.
Thanks so much!!

It sounds like what you want is a Concordance?

A concordance is a word index to the Bible, listed alphabetically. If you are looking for a passage regarding "joy" then you would find all the Biblical passages listed.
A commentary is more what you need. Two excellent ones would be the Navarre Bible Commentary and the Ignatius Study Bible. These are very solidly Catholic, nothing you need to sift.
Unfortunately, the both of these come in "parts". The Navarre NT Compact or Expanded commentary or [ur=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1586172506/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1586172506&linkCode=as2&tag=familyfoodfor-20]Ignatius Catholic Study Bible: New Testamen[/url] are the best for convenience, but the OT has to be purchased book by book.

We've found the individual Navarre Bible texts and commentaries very helpful ~ our favorite Scripture resource. There is a full New Testament version, which looks like a good option, but I haven't seen a copy. This review might be helpful. The BLOG appears to be devoted to discussing various Catholic bibles, with multiple pages devoted to discussing study bibles. The comments look interesting but I haven't done an exhaustive search of the site, so I'm uncertain of its full content.
We also own individual Gospel books of the Ignatius Study Bibles, which are now available in a full New Testament version. My personal preference is the Navarre Bible for the richness of its commentaries and the use of quotes from the early Church Fathers and saints, but I have not seen the full New Testament versions of either to be able to discern between the two.

Glad we're on the same page, Servant!
I just came back to add that the difference or rather the uniqueness of the Navarre and Ignatius Commentaries is that it includes the Bible text. It reads like a bible, with the footnotes having the commentary corresponding to the passage (or extra pages with commentary). This can be used as your daily Bible.
There are other commentaries that are more reference. You look up a passage to find the commentary regarding it. These look more like an encyclopedia rather than a Bible. There is no Biblical text except in context of the extracted passage. The majority if not all of them have some wayward theological interpretations that have infiltrated the Catholic Biblical community for years. That's why these two above will be with the highest recommendation.

Thanks ladies. Yes, Jen and Servant, a commentary is what I am looking for. Now I know what to call it!
The Ignatius Study Bible looks more in my price range. Hoping they put out the OT as one book soon... Actually, I have had that book on my wish list on Amazon for a couple years.
Thanks for your help and guidance!
