Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I came across this pin (and its added description) on Pinterest, and it struck me how reactionary it is, in a sense, against the secularism, and maybe even Protestantism, that pervades our culture.

Holy Mother church, in her wisdom, has given us so many special things to celebrate, so many remembrances! Every Sunday is a mini Easter!

Now, in one sense, I understand the sentiment. I don't see why I should own nice things if I'm afraid to use them or enjoy them.

But some occasions ARE really special. I mean, sometimes you open an expensive bottle of wine just because, but how are special things made special if we don't differentiate the special days somehow through our actions?

Anyway, I think I am rambling and about to start talking in circles. It just seems like once people stop having special days given them by either ignorance or rejection, they can't help yearning for it, and yet, our culture's response is that we'll just make every day special.

Yes I've seen things like this.. I think one of the first that came through email.. was about the woman who finally wore the special lingerie at her own funeral because there had never been a special enough occation to use it.

And so often the special things are saved so long that even when there is a special occation we don't use them for fear of losing them.

And like more reactions to one extreme, the response is the other extreme.. don't save anything for special, every day is special.

When we're lucky the pendulum slows and actually winds up somewhere near the middle.

I have a very similar reaction when I hear/see things such as this. Dare I say I roll my eyes a bit? It reminds of the feel-good way in which our culture has taken us directionally. Everybody's a winner!

But then again, I, like you, understand the sentiment. Every day *is* special (but more like in a everyday is a once in a lifetime experience kind of way - today is unique, it will not be tomorrow, nor was it yesterday).

Is today special? Yes.

Is today SPECIAL? No.
