Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

In looking for "easy reader" type saint stories, I came across this series called Footsteps of the Saints by Brother Ernest CSC. I've never seen it before, and can't find any reviews or thoughts on it. Are any of you familiar with these books, and if so, what do you think? Are they written as stories or more as biographies?

Thanks!
Diana

I am assuming Jen will comment soon. She has recommended them before for young readers.
book(s) of saints

When these first came out as reprints in 2008, there is another thread where a comment from the publisher of the reprints is included.
Saint Resource Questions

Quote:
When these were originally printed they came in 4 different reading levels but they were not labeled as Level 1, 2 , 3, and 4. I did this to make it easier for people collecting them for their children to know which books were which. Level 1 has about 32 pages which many 1/2 page pictures. I started reading these to my children at an early age and they were reading them by themselves easily by 2nd grade.

From the book about St. Cecilia these is on 1 of the pages-

"You will win your brother, Valerian. But soon after that both you you suffer martydom," replied the angel.
Then the light began to dim and the glorious angel disappeared."

I agree there are far to few books about the saints for younger readers. By reading these books all 3 of our children and found that they enjoy reading about the saints and we use them as role models.

The Level 2 are 96 pages and have fewer pictures. But 4th grade would be able to read these as well. Even so I enjoy the Level 2 as I have learned alot about the saints from typing and reviewing them as well.

I hope to try and publish 20 to 50 books each year as I have the time and money to do so.

I hope this helps you and if I can answer any other questions please let me know.

Our Lady of Grace Pray for us,
Mary's Books Publishing

I'm not Jen, but these are wonderful. They were originally printed by Dujarie Press. This site gives a list if the books and further info.

The Level I books are very short, each level is a bit more pages and higher reading level.

The style is "living", where the characters come alive. I only had one book growing up, on Dominic Savio, and the story and illustrations stayed with me as such fond memory.

The illustrations are simple black and white.

Highly recommended.

My only disappointment is that these reprints are paperback and all the same color, so not attractive on the shelf to entice young readers. And it will take some money to start building the collection. But buying out of print versions is even pricier, as these are rarer to find.

Okay, I must have Christmas Hang-Over, but it took me a while to undersand how you wern't Jen?       I though someone hacked your 4Real account and was posting for you.... I get it now, your not JenMac!

I just ordered a few of these for my reluctant readers. The website where they are being re-published is not working well. Just call if you need to order. They are offering free shipping for the rest of 2012! And if you buy a set of 10 books you get 10% off.

I had a really lovely conversation with the Lady that I ordered the books from--I miss Wisconsin! This is really a labor or love for them. All of the money they make from the books they are putting back into the company to get more published! They are also set to release a few Level 3 books this spring.

I am excited to get mine and hopefully light a fire under some of my readers!

It does get confusing because both Jennifer Miller and I go by Jen/Jenn. And I guess we've been friends here so long that it's easy for me - if I see Jenn with 2 n's then I know that's Jenn Miller...and 1 n is me. But, it probably would be confusing for others. And I confess...it does get confusing for me if someone types to Jenn Miller with only 1 n. I really have to look at the context to figure out they mean to chat with JeNN.

ANYHOO....

This would be my summary review EXACTLY!!! We love the books (!!!), wish they weren't paperback and wish there was some variation in the covers since they're all a light blue with black font/print.

Thank you all! I'm so glad to hear that these books are enjoyable. BTW, I might be weird, but I like that they all have matching covers :-)
