Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am not sure where I have been since I had never heard of this woman before but maybe some of you are in the same boat. Sr. Marianne Cope will be cannonized Oct. 12, 2012. Here is more info. Very interesting!

This is wonderful- thanks for posting! I have long admired Mother Marianne's work in Hawaii.

Very excited about the upcoming canonization here. Blessed Kateri is getting more of the "publicity" so it's nice you mentioned it. I usually start an October canonization thread but didn't this year.

Here are some resources posted in past threads:

I love anything by Eva K. Betz, and she has three books regarding the holy workers at Molokai:

Yankee at Molokai: Brother Ira Dutton
The Quiet Flame: Mother Marianee Cope (soon to be canonized in October)
Knight of Molokai: Father Damien

When my daughter did a history fair project several years ago on the history of nuns in nursing and the medical fields, she covered Bl. Marianne Cope (soon to be Hawaii's next saint!) and the Robert Louis Stevenson info came up then.

Speaking of Robert Louis Stevenson, he also wrote this poem about Bl. Marianne Cope, who also served the Hansen's Disease patients in Hawaii, and assumed charge of Father Damien’s Boys’ Home after his death.

Quote:
Reverend Sister Marianne
Matron of the Bishop Home, Kalaupapa

To see the infinite pity of this place,

The mangled limb, the devastated face,

The innocent sufferers smiling at the rod,

A fool were tempted to deny his God.

He sees, and shrinks; but if he look again,

Lo, beauty springing from the breast of pain!—

He marks the sisters on the painful shores,

And even a fool is silent and adores.

Robert Louis Stevenson

I haven't read any, but this site has a large listing of
Marianne Cope books.

She is included on the lists for the Saints associated with each US State - Hawaii and New York
