Under Domestic Church? I think it fits here (if not, go ahead and move)...
This year is a Sacramental year for my daughter (gush!). I am so very excited for her! But I want to digress for just a moment; so begins my little story. For a long while now, as part of our day, my girls and I all say the Act of Contrition. Prior to saying it, I ask my little girls to think about any sins that they've committed (quietly, privately in their own thoughts - not to share them aloud). We have a few moments of silence while we all take some time to reflect. Then we pray the Act of Contrition. Afterwhich, it's not unusual for my daughter (the one who will be celebrating her Sacraments this year) to share with all "I never know what to confess because I haven't done anything wrong!"... now at this point I could offer to list the offenses to her , but I typically just remind her that we often forget what we've gone. Which got me to thinking that with her Reconciliation and First Holy Eucharist coming up what a wonderful time to journal her thoughts (and perhaps her sins!... as a gentle reminder and a way to prepare herself for her private Reconciliation later this fall, so she knows what to say). But since it's also a special year with her First Holy Eucharist I think a diary/journal is a wonderful way for her to record her own private thoughts, concerns, excitement, and experiences with Sacramental Prep. So true to my own nature, a simple notebook from the local grocery store just won't do . I want something special for her. So, I found some lovely handmade Diaries and Journals on Etsy. Oh, my lovely! But yes, they are $49 . I would love and appreciate having something like this for my daughter (and she's a lot like me, so I know that she would love it too!), but it *is* a lot of money to spend. So here's the meat and potatoes of my request - does anyone have any other suggestions for me? I love the idea of a handmade journal (and I actually pinned one on Pinterest not too long ago - a "how-to" make your own, but now's not the time for me to do that, that's a good project for days that aren't quite so filled with baby food and poo). I want it to be special, a keepsake, and although she'll be 8 years old in November, I don't necessarily want it pink with hearts (know what I mean?) - this is something that I want to grow with her and her passion for all things pink, purple, butterflies and hearts is lessening as she matures. I want it to fill her with joy for all seasons of her life, so I'm not looking for anything too girly.
Would love your help, ladies!

Thank you! I have to say, I am so very excited about this too. I think it would be a wonderful keepsake for her, now and well into adulthood - I can just dream of her as a young adult opening up the pages of her special journal and reflecting back on that time of her life! ... or, perhaps I'll end up tacking this onto the list of shattered ideals ... aren't we Mom's funny that way .
I'd do myself a bit of good to remember that this is for her, not for me, and she'll do with it what she will and that it's not for me to prod. Prodding would squash all enjoyment and pleasure in an instant!

I really love that idea!
What about getting a regular sturdy journal and making a cover for it? Felt is really easy to work with and she could change the cover as she got older.
Felt Journal Cover
Wool Felt Journal
She might like to make one herself like this Button Journal Cover
