Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have been thinking, on and off, about a curriculum for character training, but I haven't implemented anything. I know there are a lot of good books on virtues for children, but I have been intrigued by the Duggar's character training resources. Though the Duggars don't come from the Catholic perspective, their children are obviously well-trained. Does anyone have experience with the curriculum they use, which is from the Institute of Basic Life Principles? This link takes you to their store, which sells the character booklets I have recently heard about. http://store.iblp.org/categories/CH/

I'd love to hear anyone's experience, either with this company or another. Thanks!

I've not had experience with IBLP, but the topics sure do look wonderful for the most part!

We've used various resources from various places, but not were a full curriculum in themselves (ie the character-building in CHC; Squire and the Scroll supplement; Young Man's Handybook and the like).

As far as curriculum-curriculum goes ---

I've heard a lot of good things about Pearables:
http://www.pearables.com/

but have also not actually used or seen their materials.

I really want to get the two younger boy-books for my son.

I wonder if the Boys Scouts have anything available?

My parents bought the "character sketches" series when I was a child (30+) years ago and read them aloud in the evening to us. (I had totally forgotten about this until now!) I grew up in a Protestant (somewhat anti-Catholic) household.

All are sketches from the bible with a story of animal behavior/character related. All include some kind of virtue development throughout. I'm sure it's very protestant, but easily adjusted/added to with Catechism or tenants of our faith. There wouldn't be anyting from saints....which you could also add. Maybe I can get my hands on those if my parents still have them....

I currently have bought the books "from boyhood to manhood" and"made for work" for my husband and son to work through together. I've read them both and they contain some great ideas/ethics for boys.

PACE is nice if you want something Catholic. I've not seen the other resources mentioned so I can't compare though.

I came across the Nashville Dominicans Virtues in Practice program that I shared in this thread. It is supposed to be available for purchase in September, but I think that just the chart for the parent guide would make it really easy to put together your own program with living books. The comprehensive overview of the virtues themselves and the assigned saints is the biggest part of the work.

Also, a non-Catholic but good resource is Laying Down the Rails, but it isn't really organized like a program to implement as such.
